should read this:

Salmonella Outbreaks Linked to Produce on the Rise

Produce is Primary Cause of Large Salmonella Outbreaks

Most people properly associate Salmonella with raw poultry. But according to an analysis of food-poisoning outbreaks by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, fresh produce is catching up with chicken as a major culprit of Salmonella infections. And, says CSPI, produce-related outbreaks tend to be larger than poultry-related outbreaks, and sicken more people, sometimes hundreds at a time.

In CSPI’s Outbreak Alert! database, which contains information on nearly 4,500 outbreaks between 1990 and 2003, produce triggered 554 outbreaks, sickening 28,315 people. Of those 554 outbreaks, 111 were due to Salmonella. Although poultry has historically been responsible for far more Salmonella infections, in the most recent years in CSPI’s database, produce seems to be catching up. From 1990 to 2001 poultry accounted for 121 Salmonella outbreaks and produce accounted for 80. But in 2002-2003, produce accounted for 31 Salmonella outbreaks and poultry accounted for 29.

5. No kidding
Living a long good life is all about minimizing risk, not eliminating it.

6. my personal theory on some of this
is actually close - I think a certain amount of food borne illness is because we tend to live in such sterile environments and have no immunity to some of these organisms.

Not all mind you, the mass production process our food goes through certainly contributes, but I have a feeling if kids ate more dirt they would be healthier!

9. I hear ya
I used to get stomach viruses and colds all the time until I was in the Navy. I think being exposed to all those people in close quarters, not to mention the somewhat-less-than-pristine conditions of berthing and the mess decks strengthened my immune system. I hardly ever get sick anymore.

18. There ya go.
I've thought the same thing for years. People are so squeemish these days, they won't even consider it. Medically, it makes sense.

4. You know - I got violently ill after eating from a salad bar at work.
It may not have been salmonella - but I think it was something from the salad bar. I got really sick starting about 4-5 hours later. They are changing vendors - so the old vendor is running down all of their inventory and dropping their standards. Yesterday they sold me a personal pizza that was totally undercooked - the dough was not even cooked in the center of the pizza.

I read somewhere that the Center for Disease Control said eating out is one of the most dangerous things a person can do - because of food poisoning.

Oh and - I'm a lacto-ovo-vegetarian.

you can no longer eat from salad bars or other raw vegetables except at "a" list restaurants

reason -- raw veggies being imported directly from mexico -- and it's legal

a friend of my mom's died of hep a, reason, raw green onion from mexico -- on his salad in a chain restaurant in tennessee

you would not eat a raw veggie in mexico w.out a hep a vaccination

now, because of new import allowances, you should not be eating raw veg here either unless you grow it yourself or KNOW for a certainty where it was grown

never eat uncooked veg at a chain or fast food restaurant, that is just asking for it

not all die of hep a, most just wish they had

11. Howdy
Running a bit late as usual - ran to town yesterday for all the fixings (been buying Turkeys on sale at every trip - stocking up for the year) and of course a couple key ingredients got left behind, so already had to run to town this morning for sausage for the stuffing. Fortunatley we aren't having any company this year and being a couple hours late won't affect much but kids appetites!

And on the way home I saw th little orphan filly that runs with an old paint gelding that I hadn't seen in about a month - was kind of worried she wasn't going to make it.

from about two months ago

And we have 40% chance of rain this afternoon - YAHOO!!!! We could sure use some moisture.

Wow this got off topic eh?

8. Happy Thanksgiving with quotes from Woody Allen's futuristic movie
Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak or cream pies or... hot fudge?
Dr. Aragon: Those were thought to be unhealthy... precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.
Dr. Melik: Incredible!
