I'd like to see someone say what the Bible says about numbers 2, 10, 11, 14 and 15.

2. That and the fcc should go back to the rule that says
Edited on Thu Jul-17-03 01:00 AM by Classical_Liberal
That public service religious programing should be granted for free. Now it goes to the highest bidder which means the televangelist, who are all religious right and from religions that aren't even a significant minority in most parts of the country except the South, monopolizes religious broadcasting. It wouldn't be as difficult as removing the tax exempt status either. Just requires a president appointing the right people to fcc.

5. Considering all the televangelist...........
On TV, I'd say they must be getting free air time. Some people must sit in front of their TV sets 24 hours a day just watching those faux preacher sucker in the gullible. Sad part is they suck in the money too. Little old ladys who are eating cat food and can't afford to pay the pharmacy for their medication are sending in their nickles and dimes to those Charlatans. And Bush doesn't want to give any relief to the elder with the high medical bills, he just wants to protect the HMO's. Compassionate conservative republicans believe charity begins at the holy-roller fire and brimstone preacher's pockets.

7. Before that ruling it was mostly local churches rather than con artist
Edited on Thu Jul-17-03 01:32 AM by Classical_Liberal
. In order to put in the highest bids, they have to con (brainwash and scare) the little old ladies for doe. It is a viscious circle jerk. It is corrupting of religion, and the state. The neatest thing about requiring it be donated free, is that it actually helps the churches in this country, so they can't claim we are antireligion. Meanwhile it totally fucks things up for the Christian Coalitions, and the Republicans, as this is where their most rabid supporters come from.

8. Thanks for this, a great behind the scenes documentary
(a mockumentary, really) to watch about televangelism is "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." Her stand on AIDS was kind of touching and unexpected especially considering it was during the beginnings of the epidemic, but boy does it show what a weasel Jerry Falwell is.

In regards to the thread, it's particularly sickening to me, especially in light of the fact that these are the same folks who bitch about all the social aid and tax relief being given to immigrants and minorities. The hypocrisy is astounding.

And it is present in so-called progressive Christianity as well. My brother was involved in a non-denominational Christian churche and the pastor and his wife both drive brand new Mercedes, and the money they take in in unbelievable. It's a yuppie kind of church for materialistic but jaded Baptist-defectors.
