Repukes say "Poor Jean Schmidt" didn't know Murtha was a marine
Get this quote from Sunday's NYT.

"Several Republicans who were on the House floor said afterward that Ms. Schmidt did not appear to know she was referring to a much-decorated veteran.

"The poor lady didn't know Jack Murtha was a Marine - she really just ran into a hornet's nest," said Representative Jack Kingston of Georgia.

Representative David Dreier of California said, "Very clearly, she did not know that Jack Murtha was a Marine.""

I can think of only one word to describe this BULLSHIT!

These guys are such out and out liars that they will put out the totally incredible in order to justify the unjustifiable conduct of one of their own.

Not that I was expecting them to admit fault but this exceeds all expectations.

1. Typical Republican........
have no idea what they're talking about, just keep attacking and spewing hate without the foggiest notion about the facts.
She is no "poor woman". Do a little research before you open your gaping maw, Jean.
She's the most despicable, vile, ugly woman in the House of Representatives.

21. She knew he was a Marine.
I wouldn't be surprised if she was earning her cred by delivering a preplanned (by the Cons, that is) attack. Everyone in America who was not in a coma knew Murtha was a decorated Marine Colonel.

I call complete, total, utter BULLSHIT.

"He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: that cowards cut and run, Marines never do."

Somebody want to tell me how that makes sense if it wasn't a Marine trying to put down another Marine?

And if you watch the whole thing again whenever they talk you'll hear the same old talking points about the military and hiding behind the troops. It was all pre-planned. EVERYTHING they do is preplanned. Only thing they care about is campaigning to keep their seats.

92. Even if .. and that's a big IF ... she didn't know, it's for sure
that Buph DID know and threw her under the bus. She must have owed Buph BIG TIME to have blindly walked into that. Just goes to show she was a plant of a candidate who didn't understand what it was she was running for, but was told that she would be told when the time came ... told how to vote, told what to say, told who to support and who to demonize ... They didn't want to elect someone that thought on their own.

She was just a body and a name on a ballot. Now, she is political history. Good enough.

104. Another spin that is now twirling on the RW
is the "fact" that Murtha was in disagreement with the war to begin with. I think this is on the Malkin site, but I don't want to publish that link.

I read the article in the link and really interpretted it as Murtha questioning the wisdom of the war in the beginning but not coming down on it completely.

9. This is what I call the 'Rush Limbaugh Defense'.
Whenever one of these people (and I use that term loosely) gets caught in a lie or makes an asinine comment that gets them in hot water, they say they were only joking or they were taken out of context or, in this case, didn't know all the facts. They then proceed to play the victim card and turn it around on the big bad liberals for picking on them. Boo-freaking-hoo.

Its bullshit alright.

36. Yep, that's a classic example of the 'Rush Limbaugh Defense'.
Limbaugh was the pioneer in this strategy. I remember years ago whenever he would get caught red-handed in a lie or distortion he would fall back on the line that he is only providing entertainment, that he's only joking.

(I used to have to listen to his show back then because I shared an office with a guy who liked to listen to him. Pure hell for me.)

she should have known, but I also think it could be true that she did not. She is brand new and still learning, and personally, military status is not one of the things I would learn first.

So I'm not excusing her lack of knowledge, she should have learned. But I don't necessarily think it is a lie.

First...Schmidt didn't just go up and grab the microphone and blab...she was scheduled by someone in the GOOP leadership for that time and they had a pretty good idea of what she was gonna say before she got up there. I won't even do into Drier's total bullshit, but she knew what she was doing, the Repugnicans knew what they were doing. It was chickenshit tactics.

They hoped to get the videos of the "big mean Democrats" beating up on this poor small white woman and, sure enough, out comes the wacko base with the spin points and the parallel universe/history. In their view, it was Murtha who was beating up on her, not the other way around. The bully! :sarcasm:

30. this leads to an interesting conversation with my kool aid mom.....
She called me on friday night.. right after my husband and I were trying to make sense of what "actually" happened in that mess in the "house" . I mentioned the guys name (murtha) and she immediately said "OH THAT BUFFOON!!!" I was trying to explain what actually "happened".. ie.. regarding the resolution. She kept saying .. "Thats not what he said in his SPEECH".. I tried to explain the difference between a speech and congressional matters... Then she proceeded to go into a long diatribe about how "this name calling has gotten out of control".. I responded with,,, "MOM.. you called the guy a buffoon".. I then decided to change the subject. I give up. Her father was a hard core Misery Dem. Love her dearly .. I have always been careful about political subject matter but she has gotten worse with the kool aid thing,(way more rabid.. whats in the reservation water these days? anyone know?????) My husband has a RW dad from Idaho.. He keeps telling his dad " You are out of touch with the majority of Americans".. shuts him right up. I can't say that to my mom, cause I love her too much.. and she is getting old. whatever,, KOOL AID FOR ALL.

However, the last time I spoke w/her on anything political, she confided in me that bush was the worst president she had ever seen, (we're talking about back to the Calvin Coolidge days here), and she felt the nation was coming apart because of bush and his policies.

This, from a woman who will not carry a dime, because it has FDR on it!

Sometimes...it is better to change the subject, and let them work it out as facts present themselves. Those that follow the GOP line come around to reality eventually, albeit grudgingly...:)

Mean Jean, how appropriate. I guess we can call her Mean Stupid Jean now.

Go back and watch the video of her little speech. You can tell she practiced this. She had it all placed perfectly for drama empahisis and the like. No mistake at all. And she made it clear to whom she was talking to and that she did know he was a Marine.

They put her out there to deliver their message and then depended on the misogynist Republican population to believe that a woman might not have known what she was talking about, therefore forgiving her because she is a woman.

75. It does not matter if Schmidt "knew" Murtha was a Marine or not
the point is the personal nature of her remark. . .and then the lie she propagated minutes later about stating it.

One does not become a "coward" simply because they haven't served in the military. Frankly, I'm tired of this hero-worship crap - yes, I appreciate the service of our vets and of our soldiers now, but as a gay man who also knows that same military boots out good soldiers because our straight boys are paranoid about their peepees in the shower, I'm not apt to put these people on a pedestal.

Schmidt went against her own code with her remarks. She should resign immediately because she no longer has any credibility. The little saber-rattling wrap-me-in-the-flag crap is ridiculous. Unless she tottles down to the recruiting office and enlists herself, she should have kept her big mouth shut. The only courage she has shown is the ability to come off as a nutcase. But then, that's what a christo-fascist is...isn't it?

This whole thing was pre-planned. After she makes her statement someone RIGHT AWAY comes up and says they need to take it off the record and blah blah blah. They make it look like they are talking but they probably aren't or he's telling her "good job" or some nonsense like that. It was all timed too perfectly. A democrat tried to object to taking out her comments but he was ignored of course.

101. One can only hope
Unfortunately, many of the people who were stupid enough to vote for her - who we know are are stupid enough to buy into this notion that ending a war or not going there in the first place equals cowardice - are probably also stupid enough to believe it's okay to say that to a decorated veteran as long as he's a Democrat and vote for her again. It's certainly possible that she's calculating enough to do that on her own, or maybe she took one for the team. It just seems to me that if either of those possibilities were correct, she'd have taken more care with her wording.

Then again, I'm a thoughtful person.
