Poll question: How many of us are actually doing something other than surfing?
Saw 8 elderly people out at the mall today standing on the street corner holding various signs that said things like

2080+ dead because of lie

How many neo-cons indicted? I cant count that high

Impeach bush

Got to thinking how many of the 70,000+ here do stuff?
The ball only moves when you push it not when you think about it.

1. good point.
But doing stuff on your own counts too.

Educating friends and neighbors or talking to people on the streets.

I even met one person who tells phone solicitors FIRST before they get to give him their speach.

And I've been known to tell people who call with the wrong number too. (Bet they won't call me again!)

2. I could do more but I take part in protests, spread information via
myself and flyers when I have time, and do my best to contact reps and Senators along with the MSM when they do something right.

5. COOL I didnt even know that existed!
Helping people who want to do something but are lost should be a high priority here I think.

7. noon vigil for an hour once a week-
calling, writing, engaging others in conversation-

I'm not afraid to speak out anymore- i'm afraid of remaining silent.

I embarass the hell out of my youngest- but listening to him talk with his friends when they aren't aware- and feedback from teachers etc. re-inforce the wonderful value of living out loud- living your talk-

My 22yr old is a new hippy- working in the construction 'red-neck' world- and he not only holds his own, he's actually converted others, and doesn't 'rub their noses' in it-

We're doing our best to make things better- even if it isn't bearing visible fruit-

10. hey-
i'm the 'tangent' queen- so bear with me ok?

My son did a report on Ray Charles for school- it was awesome- (he's 12 and the only AA in a very white coner of this world)
One of the things he learned, and taught ME was that Ray wanted very much to be a part of MLKjr's struggle- He marched with him at one time, but it became clear to him that his best 'help' was something very different and yet essential.
MLK spent alot of time in jail- (civil disobedience) and needed bail money, and the movement needed money to be effective. Ray told MLK that he would be of more use to the cause by doing what he did best- making his music, and donating funds- he said something to the effect of "What good would it be for me to march with you? I wouldn't know when to duck when people threw things at me!)

He also thought it was pretty silly that the school he went to - a school for the BLIND had segregated bathrooms- like, anyone there could tell the difference- The man was a real inspiration- and knew how to laugh, and lift up this weary world with a gift that is without measure-

Your doin plenty- no one needs to justify what we do- our lives are out work-

Our speaking out even here is 'doin' something- I didn't even think of the 'competitive' aspect to this poll, till i read your very apt response-

Thanks for doing something I often can't.

Tangent over-

11. I surfed today
in between making about 200 phone calls to get people to our informational meeting for a state wide coalition. Tomorrow more phone calls, printing bylaws and putting them together, Monday preparing the meeting and doing it. Yes, busy here but I did not used to be. This place is what helped get me inspired.

13. I've worked my ass off for years at outside protests
Now I protest on the inside, via websites, my blog, my articles, and by donating what little money I have.

I'm always put-off by these kinds of activist pissing contests.

You never know what people are doing on a day to day basis. I don't have kids at home, but I know that raising aware, awake citizens is as important a job as any protest... maybe more. If George 41 had cared enough about his family to learn from his father's legacy and instruct his sons in how to be human beings, we wouldn't have the situation we have now.

We live in a universe of chaos. None of us know whose butterfly wing is going to trigger the metamorphosis.

14. Hey there. I sort of disagree with your premise:
The ball only moves when you push it not when you think about it.

What I think changes the way I behave, the way I interact with my peeps, with the way I speak.

Knowing is, in itself, a very powerful tool.

18. true...but will thinking alone change the trajectory of something?
physical interaction with reality is needed for that.

15. My days off work revolve around protests
I took a week off to go to the DC protest and civil disobedience.

I am not one to join groups, not my style. But I would say I average at least once per month of physically getting out there and participating in something. Protests, workshops, meetings.

I always wish I could do more - win the lottery and become a full-time activist or something - but for now I do what I can. My job is sort of social-action oriented too.

20. Well, can't do as much as some because of work schedule
But I do what I can. I have been involved in various picketings and am always running my mouth, er, talking to people about the evil regime. Will sometimes print leaflets and put 'em on cars too. No matter what one may do, a little or a lot, just do something. Our world depends on it.

21. Mondays are my letter writing/ petition days, and I do
participate in protests in my city. I also work for the local Dem party during election seasons.

Online activism is very simple these days; there are many sites, like the Union of Concerned Scientists, that only require hitting the "reply" once to send a letter to your rep. I know that my evil congresscritter reads them too-because I frequently get replies from him on the issues.

23. Both (A) and (B)
I belong to my local democratic club and am the democratic block captain for my precinct.

I also do my own personal "guerrilla stickering campaign" whenever I'm out and about. And internet activism, as well.

24. I would like to be more involved, but I am a caretaker
Hubby is recovering from surgery and is on dialysis. Part of three days a week are taken up taking him 25 mi. to the dialysis clinic and then taking him home. Then there is the doctors' appointments...and helping him maintain his glucose levels...and then there is fighting with the system to get him the care he needs...

I get a lot of knitting done. But I sign petitions and do what I can.
