The headlines could have been: Dems refuse vote on Republican resolution
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 12:49 PM by DeepModem Mom
I'm in the should-have-walked-out camp; the headlines today about the vote last night should have been anticipated. And the complexity of the whole thing will be lost on the public. Dems could have made their statements in debate, both about the war and the Republican maneuver, and then walked out, refusing to be a part of Republican trickery. We have ourselves to blame this time, not the press. There's no room for nuance in headlines, or fast-paced TV headline news.

Keep it simple. The Republicans understand this. We're very often too smart for our own good.

2. If they had done that, the news and Republicans
would have spun it into "they cut and run from the vote". That would have been a no win for the Dems. This way, they stood with the pugs in turning it down. Since they did the same thing as the pugs it can't be spun against them.

3. That would have seemed cowardly.
Can't run from the have-you-stopped-beating-your-wife question.

4. Even simpler: "Republican Resolution Fails"
And more accurate, too.
