Only Clinton Whitman reacted. Only he came to help.
As Portland police officer Matt Tobey’s head hit the ground again and again, as the man on top of him, swearing and grunting, kept hitting him, only Whitman stepped in, pulling the man away.
“He saved Matt’s life,” Sgt. Randy Teig said. “No question.”
And Tobey said he could not find words that expressed the depth of his feelings.
“He was a blessing to me, simply,” he said. “The guy who was beating on me wouldn’t have stopped unless this guy pulled him off — I’m sure of that.”
But Whitman, 53, doesn’t think of himself as any kind of hero. Home for him is a 1977 Lincoln Versailles, faded pastel yellow, with tags that expired in December 2003. It runs but is never driven, staying instead in the parking lot of the Red Apple Tavern on Northeast Killingsworth Street near 64th Avenue.
Two weeks after police credit him with saving the life of one of their own, he is still there, in the parking lot, downplaying his actions as police drive up every so often to offer thanks or donations. Bret Smith, the commander of Northeast Precinct, where Tobey is assigned on the graveyard shift, hopes to find Whitman transitional housing — another way of showing gratitude.
