Katherine Harris wore at the Civil Rights Commission Hearing following the 2000 election. There was such an obvious difference in dress then the commission members,headed by Mary Francis Berry and the witnesses. I thought to myself what the hell is she thinking! OH-2, my district, is the most conservative district in the state of Ohio, and one of the most conservative districts in the entire country.

Rob Portman held that seat easily, and effortlessly, until being rewarded by the Bushies with the US Trade Rep position. Enter the Republicans bickering in the primary, even big-name local ones like DeWine's kid. Somehow, Schmidt kept her wrinkled mouth shut and rose above the bickering to win the nomination. Everyone thought she'd skate through the special election.

Until Paul Hackett surprised even the most veteran of local Democrats by winning his primary. He went on the offensive, called Schmidt a Rubber Stamp Bushie, called her and Bush chickenhawks, and basically gave the Republicans hell. I swear, if he'd have had two more weeks to run, he'd be in that congressional seat right now.

I always thought Schmidt was a weak candidate, but her actions yesterday prove it. She won't even win her '06 primary, let alone her seat, even as an incumbent.

So, although it's sad to be represented by her down here in OH-2, I'd wager that if Dems field the right candidate, we could take back that seat. It's a miracle she won it in the first place.
