Blistering column about Woodward & journalists in the LA Times
Woodward joins a decadent dance

Whatever impact the scandal surrounding the leak of former CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity ultimately has on the Bush administration, it continues to spread through the Washington press corps like a toxic plume.

As it does, it discredits not only individual reporters and damages their news organizations but also an entire style of reporting that has come to dominate the way Americans are informed — or misinformed — concerning their government's conduct.

This week's casualty was the Washington Post's Bob Woodward, who, as it turns out, has concealed for 17 months the fact that a Bush administration official he still refuses to name to his readers leaked Plame's identity to him before the vice president's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby — now under indictment for perjury — named the then-covert agent to New York Times reporter Judy Miller and others.

It still may call itself investigative journalism — and so it once was — but now it's really just a glittering and carefully choreographed waltz in which all the dancers share the unspoken agreement that the one unpardonable faux pas is to ask who's calling the tune.

1. Media hid the truth about BushInc's crimes and failures for 5 years.

But history and the facts are now catching up to them.

The catch up journalism is now kicking into gear so some in the media can rescue whatever credibility they can salvage.

3. I hope you are right, but I'm not seeing it.
I've yet to see any really hard hitting pieces going after Bush directly. Maybe as you say it is now kicking into gear so we'll see some truth for a change. I'm not holding my breath.

The corporate media is still fawning over Giuliani and McCain--and they are Bush coconspirators and enablers. They still present the Repug viewpoint unchallenged even when they know they are lying like dogs. They present the Repug lies versus the truth as EQUAL viewpoints.

2. This country has seen too many Gene Autry and Roy Roger movies
to be fooled for very long. Yes, we know all about the crooks that wear the black hats and the good guys that wear the white hats. And if that's a little before your time, try viewing, "Blazing Saddles", A more modern way to tell the story.

Woodward is so into unrestrained gratification that he didn't hear the loud shots & the shouts. "Head 'em off at the pass boys" - Fitz is riding hard on his horse, named Swift. Swift is a slow starter, but once up to full speed she'll blow the white hat right off Fitz's head.

Blazing Saddles sez is best.

4. "Woodward joins a decadent dance"
It's a perfect metaphor for him. Ghouls at the Ball.
Although I think he joined it long ago.

5. CNN reported this a.m. that Woodward told his source to reveal Woodward!
What's that about? Anyone else hear anything along these lines, or was I still dreaming?

8. True. The GOPcontrolled media is our real enemy - BushInc would be
POWERLESS without the cover they get from the corporate media.
