"Cowards Cut & Run, Marines Never Do", Republican Jean Schmidt
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 07:09 AM by mopaul
http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051119/NEWS01/511190372/-1/CINCI

Dressed in a red, white and blue suit, Schmidt, a Clermont County Republican and the most junior member of the House, took to the floor to protest the resolution.

She told her new colleagues of a phone call she had just received from freshman Ohio state Rep. Danny R. Bubp of West Union, a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve.

"He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message - that cowards cut and run, Marines never do," said Schmidt, of Miami Township. "Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from this body that we will see this through."

Democrats booed and shouted at Schmidt as Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., charged across the chamber's center aisle screaming that her comments were an uncalled-for personal attack.

1. Ford "charged" across the aisle "screaming"?
I'm sorry I missed that. I just heard her comments and the reaction on the radio 3 or 4 times. Shit, why do I always miss out on the good stuff?

4. Most of the good video from last night is here, including Schmidt's
insults. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x5403593 Spread it far and wide. As many people in America as possible need to see what really went on last night so the repubs can't try to spin it in their favor.

3. Freshmen Congressmen used to keep their mouths shut
Rarely would they even speak on the floor. They did as their party leaders told them to do, and they did not act as rabble rousers and troublemakers. They knew their place.

Jean Schmidt needs to learn her place.

18. You Think She Went Up There On Her Own???
That was planned to throw red meat at the wingnuts. They knew the Democrats would get pissed off...and damned right. Repugnicans knew her from beating Paul Hackett and thought this would put some salt in the wound.

Methinks this little tactic, just like many others, backfired big time. Her comments will be grilled all weekend...and will piss off a lot of military types who know who Jack Murtha is and not Jean Schmidt. She did us a big favor last night. Sure gave Paul Hackett, the next Senator from Ohio, a boost.

49. Oh I'm sure she was doing EXACTLY as instructed by the Repub leaders.
They wanted to get this "coward" thing out, but didn't want to expose any of their IMPORTANT members to the fire, so they basically ordered their most junior person to sacrifice herself to take that hill.

5. Wrinkled up raisin faced witch!
What does she know about anything? Of course our troops would like to feel as if they have accomplished their mission. You would not like to think about your comrades dying for nothing. I say: Tell the Iraqi's they have six months to shit or get off the pot. Our soldiers are trained for combat in about four months. What the hell is taking so long? Are the Iraqi's retarded or something? Two and a half years? Bush does not want an exit strategy because he and his cohorts NEVER want to leave Iraq. We just have to keep the heat on this issue.

7. Republicans cut funding for social programs and run to the bank
with the proceeds. Republicans are in control and New Orleans was left to languish (we killed our own citizens) for days and days, Republicans run with their mouths full of false patriotism, Republicans cut and run when they see that the wheels are coming off one of the biggest frauds ever pulled off on the American public.

Hey look, there's one cutting and running right now... avoiding shrub's offer to campaign with him/her.

9. Arrogant statement from someone who's never worn a uniform, let alone been
under fire. She has even less credibility than Chimpy in his pilot suit. Given that the majority of the US public disapproves of the war, I think she has screwed herself with her constituents, by calling the majority of them cowards.

Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 08:31 AM by WePurrsevere
it takes more brass ones and intelligence to know when the time is right to count your loses, pack up your pride and back away.

Second of all, get a huge "cow lick" of salt, put on your "thigh high waders" and consider the source. I'd be a whole lot more surprised if this Buhb's spoke out FOR it.

Colonel in the Reserves, Danny Buhp... an Ohio State Republican Rep... and from HERE:
Memberships/Affiliations: Ohio Farm Bureau; Adams County Christian School Board; Vice-President, Marine Corps Reserve Association; President, Southern State Community College Foundation Board; Staff Judge Advocate, Marine Corps League; Vice President, Adams County Traveler's and Business Bureau; Appalachian Counties Enterprise Network Board; Life Member, National Rifle Association; Life Member, American Legion
<snip>
Recipient: Joint Service Commendation Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal

Some people should come with warning labels.

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., a decorated former Marine colonel, had pushed the measure to a vote.

active (in more ways then one... see my post above for his memberships)

IME that can often make the difference between what they feel they can openly say.

BTW - I didn't think the correct term was "former" but "retired" for a ranking officer?

26. Bubp also attacked Hackett's patriotism
During the congressional elections.

From http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050801/NEWS01/508010350

The event was billed as a rally to honor veterans and local residents serving in Iraq, but much of the speech-making - particularly from State Rep. Danny Bubp, R-West Union - consisted of criticizing Hackett, an Iraq war veteran, for his differences with President Bush and the administration's policies in Iraq.

Bubp - who, like Hackett, is a Marine Corps Reserve officer - stood under the helicopter's wings in his military dress uniform, saying that the one thing military officers do not do "is criticize their commander in chief."

"I served for eight years under a president who loathed the military but we never said a word about it," Bubp said.

Max Cleland, the former Democratic senator from Georgia who lost both legs and an arm serving in Vietnam, campaigned again with Hackett Sunday and said the Republicans' criticism of Hackett was "just wrong."

"They say they support the troops," Cleland said, "but they won't support this troop."

39. Paul Hackett is in the US Marine Reserves and when not on active duty...
he is just like every other citizen of this country and has the right to criticize the * administration. While he is on active duty, one week out of the month, the two week obligation in the summer or while activated (such as stationed in Iraq or elsewhere) he can't criticize the * administration.

I wouldn't put it past an ugly witch who had to cheat to get her seat to fake a letter to read on the House floor. Funny how the power went out at just the right time during the ballot count when she won the election in OH.
