The Day the Sahara Freezes Over is the Day Iraq Will Have a Democracy.

To that point I would invite anyone to show me a past or present true free and representative government within the Middle-east, including the state of Israel. There has never been, nor, will there ever be a democracy in that part of the world. This is due in large part because the culture there is ruled by religion. A society ruled by religion cannot allow free thinkers, or freedom of thought. In the end religion requires a despotic rule that relies upon the sword and stake to insure adherence to the dictums of that religion.

Those requiring more and more deaths in pursuit of some gossamer dream of a democratic state of Iraq are fools. Only fools to follow them.

1. I disagree.
Though lord knows we're not helping them achieve it, every sovereign nation has the potential to be a democratic one. I would never say never in this situation. I would say it has a hell of a lot of work that would need to be done and a hell of a lot of policy change.

2. I agree with poster #1
They may very well become a democratic nation. That being said, our presence there is NOT speeding the process. To the Republicans who say that Iraq will fall into Civil war, WTF to do you think it is NOW! How many people died in the Mosque bombings in Baghdad this morning? How many American soldiers and Iraqi civilians have died so far this month?

Our presence only provides a target for aggression, and nothing else. If we leave, I doubt Al-Qaeda will have the presence that Republicans fear it will because the Iraqi people aren't too fond of them either. They just want the bombing to stop.

3. It was never about democracy.

Never. It was about establishing a base in the Middle East, to control the oil. The administration doesn't give a damn about Iraq becoming a democratic state.

If Iraq ever had or has a chance, the people that live there have to do it on their own.

4. I agree with you......
IMHO it was always about the neo-con dream of having a large footprint in the area.

8. They will never have a government that represents
the people....that would go against all history for that area of the world.

12. And what makes you think that?
What's the past is in the past, and the people can do what they put their energy towards.

Latin America will never have any social justice, it would go against the history of the region...oh, wait, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Chile, Venezuela....

Germany will never have a non-militaristic society, it's the way it's been since waaaaay before Charlemagne, or even Caesar. But wait, today, Germany is extremely suspicious of any type of fascist displays.

Poland will never be fully free from foreign control. Oh, wait....

The British will never work with the French on any matter.... Wait...

India will never have a secular government, it goes against their history...oops.

Don't doubt the power of change. You will fortunately be proven incorrect.

9. Democracy is purchased by the blood of patriots.
IRAQI patriots. The day America ends the occupation & removes all of our troops will be the first day of a long & difficult campaign toward democracy.

Iraq can't be free unless & until America withdraws.

10. That will be the day that a strong man starts his climb towards control
History would be stood on its head for a democracy to develop there.
