I feel like a lost American...do you?
For those of you who are young and for those of you who are among the baby boomer generation, there are truths to our experience that we share in common. Over and over, some of us feel a sense of deja vu, while you who have youth on your side are aghast at the state of our country. Young or old(er) we all recognize that our country is not just in disrepair, we live in a country OF despair. All our riches, all our smarts, our energy, even our grit and we continue to implode in America.

Everday I watch the news. I listen to the news. I discuss the news and I feel dismayed by the news. The news is this, we are sinking in America and our country's leaders are not only failing to help us bail, they are poking new holes in the boat.

We should be able to count on them, but is is abundantly clear that our government is stubbornly stuck in the era's of Johnson, Nixon and Reagan. We have grown older, our youth have grown up but our government is infantile. Nowhere has our government matched the advances we have been fortunate to invent or prosper from.

If I did not watch the news for a year, this is what I expect I would miss. Every night on CBS or PBS I would miss the stories and faces of the dead. Dead boys, dead girls, fathers, mothers and sisters and friends. Dead. They are dead because our government, our so called superior government, got it wrong--dead wrong.

Corruption. A story a night. Business, politics, churches,...in America the appetite for greed is overwhelming the common sense of most Americans. It's useless to name them all. Better to recognize that the succession of stories is unending. Greed has spread as rapidly as polio once did in the country. Our national character is corrupted and it has corrupted our youth. We are punch drunk with distraction and dimentia.

Today, as American business interests relocate, are allowed tax rebates and whatnot...what benefits do we bestow on our citizens? We slash food for our needy children whose only sin is to have been born poor. We toggle students who work hard to learn with unmanageable student loans or no loans at all. Our leaders legislate the wealthy to legally reduce their obligations to society by forcing an unproven ideal that the wealthy will somehow magically enrich our country with later unspecified investment. You see how silly it all is? We literally demand less of those who have more under the assumption they will then turn around and give the very thing we said they didn't have to give.

If you believe that someday your prince will come, that a rapturous event will elevate you above your station in life, you will believe this is progress. How is this progress?

We have sold our children into generations of debt with obscene deficits. We have sold our young soldiers into a war to prevent a war that we now know could never have taken place. We will sell our cherished public lands because they tell us we don't need them anymore and business needs them more. Do you hear it? They're saying, we're not that kind of country anymore. They're saying, we will tell you what you need and you'll believe it if you know what's good for you. That's freedom?

The simple truth of the lie we share is this: we're being told we are not a country that can afford the luxury of a civilized society. That we don't need it, that we shouldn't want it and that we're unamerican to demand it. We cut an average of $50 a month in food for children in a poor family in this country in order to spend 6 billion dollars a month in another country. Why? What about this equation makes us more secure in America? We allow bigots to rail about dubious welfare fraud whilst this government loses millions upon millions in Iraq and what do we hear? Nothing, not a peep from Congress, the WH or the press.

The people who are infuriated with the kind of reality I see criticize advocates for withdrawl from Iraq by claiming we fail to consider the consequences of that withdrawl. The same people who did not consider the consequences of waging a war of aggression across a country as large as Iraq with a small army now argue the benefit of foresight? Huh? We fight and argue in our country, we kill our youth and let's face it, that's what we're doing, and we are doing all of this for whom? For whose benefit are we waging this war?

It is a falacy to believe that the destruction of our character as a nation is restricted to New Orleans. Or even that one agent is responsible for our redemption. The people of New Orleans want to rely on song to restore a damaged regional identity. The present WH government rewards rigid loyalty to its policies with membership in an exclusive club. Strong sounding churches relegate our national identity to the sidelines favoring sheep like prayer and wishful thinking. Dysfunctional thinking may breed short term hope but it won't put food in a belly or train adults for future occupations.

Our people will be cold this winter, there is no money for heat. We have paid the oil companies instead. Our people need medicine and help understanding new benefits. We have paid the drug companies instead. There is no money to train caseworkers to aid the elderly. Our people are homeless. We have provided no bid contracts to corrupt businesses who do not kick back money toward housing. We will stop subsidizing the housing programs even for the storm ravaged families who have lost everything. Our borders are insecure. We have cut border patrols leading to vigilantism that will likely lead to violence. We are threatened with epidemics. We have cut funds to the Center for Disease Control and our government has allocated vaccine money elsewhere.

I feel like a lost American. I am reminded of my in-laws who survived the Depression and the one advantage they had. At least then, everyone was poor or poorer. Today, the wealthy not only survive, but thrive solely because wealthy politicians buy them comfort on our backs. That's not America. I now inhabit a land where politicians defend bridges for 50 people going essentially nowhere for the price of millions, over the cost of a baloney sandwich for a kid in school. That's not America.

I may live somewhere....but right now, its not in America. No sir, I am certain I no longer live in America.

Even if your body is being eating away by a deadly cancer, you may not feel like it is your body anymore, but you know that in reality it still is.

We just need to keep beating back this damn cancer.

39. I have actually been around here for
quite a spell, I don't post much usually. I guess you could call me a lurker but I prefer the term "observer". But before anyone jumps to any wild conclusions (i.e. freeper,or troll)let me assure that I'm probably further to the left than many on this board. Not bragging, just saying.

88. It wouldn't take much. You've expressed very well the feelings that
a lot of folks share.

I'd just put it into a letter and sent it to your local paper. Ours has a policy that they can shorten it if need be; yours probably does to.

7. Well said. I remember in the 1950's my father and my grand-
father (an immigrant) saying "this cannot last." Sad that what they had to say is coming true when I am approaching retirement age. It may be that I "retire" by having to take one of them with me (in the Churchillian sense.)

My 85 year old mother continually says: "This isn't America" any more. The first time she said it was after reading this summer in the NYT that there are thousands of homeless in Phoenix.

This isn't America, so how do we get our compatriots to act?

Greed. The root to "all" evil.

You're not alone. I've lost sight of what being an American is all about. It started Nov. 2000. By Nov. 2004 I was in shell-shock.

The only thing that helps maintain the meaning of being an American, is seeing the debates right now by our Democrats on the House & Senate floor, as well as those Whistle blowers & others out here (H2O MAN, Pitt and so many countless others w/their blogs) trying to get the truth out.

49. My question is: How can some people find things to praise about this mess?
My local paper had an op/ed today with a piece about how stupid the Democrats are and that they don't have a hope in Hell of winning in 2006 and 2008. He thinks Bush and Cheney, etc. are doing a good job and is happy with the direction of the country. I felt very depressed after reading his piece and have been in a funk all day. I'm guessing he will NEVER notice how bad things really are.

Who said the economy is in such good shape? It's finally starting to show some life after 5 years of Doctor Doom (Bush) scaring the crap out of people. It's still being held down by his massive deficits though - thus the "pinching pennies"...

What we (who do have some degree of integrity and fairness left) DO NOT WANT TO ACCEPT is the degree to which the disease of corruption has spread into every sector of our society. This tends to beget corrupt politicians, whose lies and betrayals are accepted as business as usual. Look at local and state politics, at how the business sector (ruled by Republicans) operates...and you will find the answer to the question, How could this band of Neo Con thugs hijack this country?

This endemic sleaze factor is operating against us 'idealists' (ie. those who believed in the Democratic principles we were taught) every single day, in every single city and state in this country. To really LOOK at this widespread phenomenon is daunting. There are many who are too overwhelmed to face it. BUT WE MUST FACE IT. TO FACE IT WE MUST SEE IT. AND WE MUST NOT TOLERATE IT. It is the cancer that is eating this country and spawning these so-called "leaders" who do not lead, "leaders" who do not believe in public service--these grasping, nefarious, narcissistic criminals who are blithely raiding the public coffers and abusing us all too trusting US citizens. These 'ends justify the means' operators are the real enemy within.

Courage. Above all, courage --to see this disease and speak of it and work against it. Everyone who has suffered a life-threatening disease understands this necessity. Once you begin to do this, hope for something better has a way of creeping back in, and the malaise you have been laboring under lightens. Many hands are going to be needed. No contribution is too small. We have been hiding our heads in the sand for a long time. This administration has forced us to see the Big Picture. We are not only fighting a small band of thieves at the top--we are fighting a deeply corrupted system.

60. Sounds like you need a break from politics...
Politics never changes - it always seems like people are repeating past mistakes and that no progress is being made. I get down at times too, though now I am rather buoyed by the recent events driven by the Democrats and the skulking of the Republicans. That's all one can see on a political landscape - the bigger picture moves much more slowly and will inevitably be depressing. Little has changed, but we are alive and food is still plentiful. There are lots of things to do as hobbies and lots of nice people if one looks hard enough.

I think I'll go find a more optimistic short term thinking thread to read - this is depressing. The more optimistic threads may not be as popular, but they let me feel better about getting up this morning and doing something enjoyable. I can help others if I first feel good about myself...

This is a post that has attempted to reach past political jocularity, and past the insular way in which I believe we maintain the present administration. Surely there are better writers on this board than I. No question my feeble attempt has fallen short of your mark.

Thanks for the personal analysis but I'm doing just fine and frankly, the responses on this thread do not sound exactly suicidal. Nor have the responses appeared to me to be the result of a popularity contest.

There is plenty of room for outrage amidst optimism. The two are not mutually exclusive. Enjoy your day in whatever activity works for you.

With each wretched conservative victory in the body politic, I stumble deeper into the abyss that is Amurika. Only recently have I been able to see the faint light of some-way-out, some positive developments that may, and I emphasize, MAY, be dropping bread crumbs on the ground that will eventually lead me back into the light of the land I used to call America. (probably with your permission) and replaced with the state of amerika. You mortgaged it in 81 for the beemer and a country club membership. While you were enjoying "the good life" you didn't even notice when they stole your dad's pension and sold his company off for scrap. You were suffering from a wicked hangover when the reports of the S & L looting (remember Niel?) cut through the haze of 'conspicuous consumption' long enough to make you look at the due-date on bill. Or maybe it was when they started giving all of the infrastructure, that you paid for, away to their buddies because they would run it so much more efficiently than the evil government ever could. Did you even notice how much more often you had to step over, or on, some 'bum' sleeping in the doorway of the little shop that used to sell the insert the product of choice here that you loved so much? You might have even thought "I wonder what happened to them, they were always such a nice couple", but WTF that's progress, right? We're building the new economy. Information, that's the coming thing, we don't have to actually make anything, I can get rich manipulating symbols with these new-fangled computer thingy's, yeah, that's the ticket.
Once the balloon payment came due in the late 80's you feared you couldn't make the payment (damn, wish I had all that coke money back now), so you looked to your new 'savior' who told you just what you wanted to hear. He talked about 'feeling your pain' and 'putting this country back on track' and you felt good because things were better. They were so good, in fact, that you didn't even care when you heard about some of the deals he was making with the newly consolidated conglomerates that decided they were paying too much $ and he should allow them to bring hundreds of thousands of 'guest workers' in to do these highly paid jobs for 15% of what your fellow citizens were making. And why not, you weren't one of them. It's ridiculous that someone that can't run fast or throw a ball can make a good living just cause they know more about logic, math, and science, than most other people. Besides, have you seen how well my portfolio is doing? What the hell do we need these geeks for anyway?
It was a bad day when you got to the office and were introduced to Raj, who was going to do your job now that your services are no longer required, and BTW, if you want a letter of recommendation for your coming job hunt you're going to have to train him to do your old job before you are escorted off the property by the vaguely familiar looking security guard. (Now I remember where I've seen him, he used to have a little shop down the street).
Oh well, life sucks and then you die. At least I've still got my portfolio, that should get me through while I get another job. But wait, what the hell happened? I had over $400,000 in the mutual fund last month! Well, I'd better cancel the vacation and get busy finding that new job.
Meanwhile, we need a new leader. Wow, things are getting pretty rough out there, my last 3 interviews had hundreds of applicants for the job I wanted! OK, time to grow up, the Republicans have always been good with money, and that Gore fella is sooooo booorrriinngg.
Besides, I can definitely see myself having a beer with that guy with the speech impediment.

Whew! kind of went off there, huh? :rant:

Got us in to this mess by taking advantage of the social backlash after the Vietnam War era wound down; and used the economic slump, which Cater had NOTHING to do with and could do nothing about, as a trojan horse to convince people that govermental intervention in the economy was bad and that tax cuts and privitization could fix everything. :puke:

I think there is so much chaos and discord around us that we have lost our vision.

I agree as well this is so much larger than political parties. In fact I've concluded after being both a Republican and a Democrat, the concept of political parties has essentially divided this nation and pitted us against one another. If we actually shed all of our affiliations and labels that have essentially been our masks to hide behind, we would be able to better see one another and ourselves. We would be able to better appreciate one another.

So Im trying to envision what a healthy, sane world looks like.

I'm looking more closely at our culture's definition of success and power and wondering what true success and power look like.

I hope others will begin asking that question and pursuing that vision.

It seems to me we have to begin knocking down the walls that have isolated and separated us from one another.

I think we need to focus less on "me" and begin focusing more on "we".

I think the more we focus on our similarities with others and build off of those, we will come together more.
