Pelosi has sent instructions to members to vote against GOP Sham
The vote
by kos
Fri Nov 18, 2005 at 05:02:21 PM PDT
The vote on the GOP sham withdrawal resolution will be tonight. Pelosi has sent instructions to members to vote against it. Of course, members can vote however they want. However, Dems should vote against this sham amendment, this nakedly political ploy, and agitate to get Murtha's resolution to the floor for a vote.

1. Debate and then
walk out en masse would be most effective.

The vote, either way, will be playing into their ploy.

4. A NO vote will be spun into campaign ads..Vote with their feet
A walk out..and straight into a press conference is they way to go..

a REFUSAL to participate in a sham is better than a "no"..

9. I don't think a 430-0 vote will win them anything
Not even a campaign ad. It's too obvious what they're doing - it failed.

18. If the dems walked, it wouldn't be a 430-0 vote
:)

The dems have got to start behaving as a cohesive group. there is strength in numbers:)

17. It was a recess so the Rules Committee could meet.
The first resolution simply allowed for the Rules Committee to meet. In about 10 minutes, the Rule will come to the floor with about an hour of debate. Then comes the debate on the actual bill.

11. Because this is a republican version of what Murtha wanted,
written by 'pukes, calling for immediate (like today, right now) pull out of all troops.

Murtha had specified: as soon as "practicable"
(I think....)

16. Worse, it's a "non-binding" resolution when the War Powers Act ...
... clearly calls for a Joint Resolution (which is what Murtha submitted). It's an exercise in craven hypocrisy and evasion of constitutional responsibilities. Congress has evaded and abdicated their responsibilities for three decades, but never as hypocritically as this week.

13. Hunters resolution called 'cut and run' from Iraq.
He called it Murtha's Resolution, but it is nothing like what Murtha wanted which was to pull out over time and to situate the troops nearby in case a redeploy is necessary. Hunter is not sincere in his call to withdrawal immediately.

If the Dems vote yes, they will look like cowards who only want to 'cut and run'. If they vote no the Repubs will be able to say they voted against withdrawal so they should stop talking about it. The only thing they can (should, IMO) do is vote present, or don't vote at all to show what a sham the resolution is, and to force the repubs to vote against their own resolution.

14. Because it's a stunt. They make a mockery of Murtha's proposal
and call it "the Murtha resolution". It is NOT. They have no intention of bringing the troops home - just to trip the dems.
Of course, I'd vote yes anyway.

15. Thanks, guys
you always come through for me when I don't understand something.

This sounds like a kindergarten game. I agree that a walkout will make the country perk up and take notice.

12. Good on Pelosi
I like what someone else suggested in another thread: try to get Murtha's bill and get them to vote on that or they all walk out together and close everything down.

22. You have to get the counter resolution up.
That would be the best scenario. Then a unanimous dem vote to follow. You will pick off a couple pukes in the process.

Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 07:50 PM by Bleachers7
After lots of arguments and bullshit here, Pelosi sees it the same way as me. A unanimous vote will throw it right back in their face. They are expecting the Democrats to abandon Murtha. Hopefully that won't happen.
