Rep. Gene Taylor of Miss. Tells It Like It Is. Give Him Credit.
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 11:29 PM by Hissyspit
In case you missed it, here are many of the words (pardon any inaccuracies, it is not a transcript) of Rep. Gene Taylor D-Miss., who in the words of Louise Slaughter "lost everything in Katrina," spoke during the House of Representatives budget reconciliation/rules debate tonight. Some choice quotes:

"The same Congress that voted to giving the wealthiest 1% of Americans tax breaks everytime.. are suddenly saying in the name of the poor folks who lost their housing, we have to hurt some to help everyone."

"Folks, this is insane."

"I remember a president who said he could cut taxes AND reduce the deficit."

"I've got a kid who lost both legs in Iraq volunteering to work the phones and help victims of Katrina."

"Don't tell me you're being fiscally responsible..." he says to Repugs. "The cruellest lie of all: The only way you can help people who have lost everything is by hurting somebody else."

ON EDIT: Here is the video link, care of liveoaktx: Taylor

And these gems from Rep. John Tanner: "No other administration in the history of this country has borrowed... as much as this administration... What has happened over the past four years is unprecedented... by you the majority party and the White House."

And that he is positioning himself for a Senate run when Lott announces his retirement.

C'mon, Geney boy!!!

That would be incredible...a Democratic Senator from Mississippi!

he came to talk sense into the Repubs. Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Uranus, was clearly thrown off when he followed him.

Oh yes, he would be an improvement over Trent Lott, wouldn't he? He can keep his leather jacket too.

12. Don't get too excited
He's very very conservative. Not quite as bad as Zell Miller, but definitely no liberal. He was one of the Democrats who voted to impeach Clinton. And he's one of the names mentioned most frequently as switching parties.

Also, he voted for John Murtha instead of Nancy Pelosi and Richard Gephardt during the House votes for Speaker and Majority Leader. Now, obviously neither Pelosi nor Gephardt was going to win, but it's generally considered a no-no to go against your party in that vote. It's the reason that James Traficant got kicked out of all his committees when he was in Congress.

14. Gene Taylor is nothing like Zell Miller
Honestly, as a Democrat I respect independent minded Dems. Zell is a Bush bot and Trafficant was a crook, but if a Democratic Rep or Senator truly votes their conscience, fine.

The similarity between Zell and Taylor is their stubborn "southern side". Gene really was great with Heckofa Job Brownie and now this spending bill.

16. Oops
For some reason, I thought Murtha was a Republican.

Gene Taylor may be a conservative Democrat but he's no traitor like Traficant was. Sorry, Congressman.

13. The horrible House Budget bill has just passed:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1933081
thread title (11/18 LBN): House passes Sweeping Budget Cut Bill (in wee hours after initial defeat)

I urge you to read that thread and the linked thread on the Pombo amendment, which is still in that bill as far as I know.

19. Thanks so much for this
Gene Taylor is a conservative southern Democrat, but he has a great heart and works for his constituents. He has been fighting ever since Katrina to get help for Mississippi. We need to support him in that fight.
