Ray Nagin on now on CSPAN WJ! Caution! racist callers out in force today:
Just before Nagin appeared a male CSPAN caller said: "Democrat blacks are sniveling cowards." "Good blacks are Republicans. Bad blacks are Democrats."
"Republicans have always fought for blacks."
:wtf: :(
Who are these people? My god. I have never heard such blatant racism. Ever since the Katrina disaster, racists have come out of their hidey holes and are proclaiming their racist thoughts.

who vote democratic as lilly livered liberals -- thus avoiding head on racist style comments.

what you are hearing is the ditto heads piping up with their version of this garbage.

7. So sad. Nagin is talking about how landlords are raising rents
and how his city, unlike NYC, sustained widespread damage and how he didn't get to have so many "Guiliani moments" and that NYC got grants and NOLA got loans. It sucks. He's asking for help. He wants the levees fixed to CAT 3 because studies are needed to build CAT 4 or 5 levees. He wants the help of the Dutch and the Germans.

14. I'm so sorry Swamp Rat! Mr. CB is a NOLA native too!
It sounds like Nagin is working to rebuild the homes and get people who used to rent into their own homes. He wants section 8 money to pay for mortgages instead of rents and for Habitat for Humanity to build homes in NOLA. I heard a report about the how the Urban Land Institute (I think) and NOLA are working on a preliminary rebuilding plan for the city.

I am a landscape architect. From he reports I've heard, many good urban/city planners, landscape architects, architects and engineers are working on the concept rebuilding plan. (I would include arborists and urban foresters in that group as well if it were up to me!) The planners are working with the residents and the business owners as well as the government!

Nagin wants the Dutch and Germans to help with the CAT 4 & 5 levee rebuilding and flood control.

Keep hope alive!

18. Just needs some help

I like Nagin and think he is what New Orleans needed for a long time someone from the business world outside of the corruption, and before the storm you could see that battle going on at city hall.

I do however think Nagin needs someone in city hall to really push the ideas. The mayor is and always has been very good at putting out big ideas and thinking outside the box, it's the getting those ideas or parts or compromises of those ideas implemented that he needs some help with.

We're NOT going to let that happen okay. We're NOT going to let the pigs do any gentrification. It's NOT happening...PERIOD.

So, keep your chin up and keep your HOPES up.

5. Who are these people? They're my neighbors. They're our relatives.
They're the kinds of people who will call you a liberal if you suggest that our criminal system is prejudiced; they're the kinds of people who will think you are belligerent if you refuse to share another Thanksgiving with them because you're tired of the old conversations that blacks are criminally prone, and hispanics are lazy people who wait for hand-outs.

8. Nagin is talking about letting people use section 8 vouchers to buy homes!
He wants NOLA owned properties to be redeveloped and wants Habitat for Humanity to help build homes. He wants more people to be homeowners.

70,000 homes have some level of damage:
3,000 red - need to be destroyed
20,000 - 25,000 yellow - may have to be destroyed
the others can be repaired.

Damn. White male Republican caller saying it was all NOLA's fault and being racist to boot. "Don't blame Bush."

Nagin: "I have looked back on this thing and I'm not perfect. Probably could have staged some busses elsewhere. But I can tell you, caller, that what I witnessed was a struggle between the state and federal government and local authority. We evacuated over 80% and had less than 100,000 people left at the end of the day."

9. Nagin: NOLA was 67% black & 98% of business owned by whites and others.
Nagin is explaining the evolution of economics in NOLA and why African Americans have not been able to get a foothold in business in the city.

He wants to build up the number of black owned businesses.

16. Okay, I've had many a beef with Ray Nagin
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 11:59 AM by ...of J.Temperance
And I'm willing to support Eddie Sapir for Mayor. HOWEVER, if Nagin is genuine about this rebuilding and Section 8 and whatnot...his ideas seem extremely good and RIGHT.

If he's genuine about this, then I'd be willing to reconsider my initial support of Sapir.

I'm in the land planning and environmental planning profession. My professional society takes on a yearly public service project. We hold charettes which are design, planning and brainstorming sessions which involve all stakeholders and community members.

I would hope that Gulf Coast professional groups like the American Society of Landscape Architects, The AIA and various urban planning groups would work with both state and private universities departments of Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Architecture, Geography, Ecology, Urban Forestry and Public Health to assist NOLA and the other devastated communities to rebuild.

I would love to see a rebuilt green and sustainable city with lots of vernacular architecture, neighborhood stores, streetcars, trees, and more parks.

Mr. CB is from NOLA and I has family there too at one time!

I love NOLA!

24. Have you
Thought of contacting Ray Nagin and/or Governor Blanco? You never know, they might be interested in your ideas too, and feel that you could contribute to the rebuilding process.

They need as MANY good and local architects and land planners to assist them. I think you should think about it, you and your professional society.

I feel AWFUL for Swamp Rat, he's often in despair over the fear of gentrification. He should know it's NOT going to happen...heck, my 86 year-old Grandmother has even said that IF they EVEN think of doing this, then she's going to tie herself to the Andrew Jackson statue in Jackson Square and refuse to leave, so that's that!

There's that lovely horse picture again :)

27. I'm in GA. My in-laws live in LA. I will try to find out what the ASLA
and other groups and universities are doing. LSU has a great LA Dept. The resources, expertise, knowledge (both book and self-taught) and the people are there! They just need money and encouragement. They built the city and they can rebuild it better than anyone else! See my previous post in this thread about the planning group which is working with the city and the residents even as we speak!

Cheers! CB

Has a great football team too :)

Sorry, where was I? I've read that other post, and the planning group sounds great, and people will trust these people more than "other" people getting involved shall we say. Because these people are doing this out of love, yes, they'll be getting paid too, but it's love of the Crescent City that's encouraged them to get involved.

But you see if they'll let your people get involved too, Mr. CottonBear KNOWS this should happen as well :)

11. About 150 years ago, Republicans fought for blacks
and, like the fetus that draws its first breath outside the womb, they were abandoned by the Repukes . . . I believe that it was in the 1876 election . . .

Wasn't it in the 1960s when the racists from the Democratic party left to become Republicans after all the "coddling" (read: fighting for their right to vote unassailed) the Dems did for the blacks?

12. Today's Southern Republicans are old time Dixiecrats. (I live in GA.)
Many, but not all, Republican I know are racist. Even my Jewish Republican friend wants her kids to go to "white only" school districts and to be raised as a gentiles. And this is from a person who was discriminated against because she's Jewish! :(

Mostly, they express themselves in very subtle ways and some are very forthright in their racism. "This school system is better." (i.e. not many blacks, wealthy parents.) "Why didn't the poor people in NOLA drive out of NOLA? It's because they already spent their welfare checks for the month." "After the Civil War, blacks stayed on the plantations as tenant farmers because they were happy living there." "I wouldn't want to live there...it's not safe...property values aren't good because of the blacks..."
And on and on and on... :(

25. You are so right ~ Racism is very much alive

and is still living deep within the Republican Party and still within the silent minds of many Democrats.

Even so called Liberal Democrats.

It is amazing to me that any Liberal Democrat would reject the political wisdom of African Americans.

Our votes are taken for granted and our leaders praised (Jesse, Al)when they are working to champion the liberal causes.

We have carried this party with our votes and our hearts, we have been rejected at the voting booth and STILL we defend the principles of the Democratic Party!

The current Democratic elected officials should wise up and take a lesson from the CBC and the tactics used by Black Leaders...

NO GUTS NO GLORY, when the chips are not on your side, don't wimp out, step up to the plate and hit that ball.

Finally, we can see that Nancy P., Harry Reid and others are swinging and that is the only way that we can win.

As Eminem says.... and STILL WE MARCH!
