This here from the Times is a really terrible description of the latest Iraq happenings in the Senate. Basically, the GOP is now pushing a watered-down version of the Democratic Iraq bill because that was the only way to avoid a potentially humiliating defeat since Frist no longer has the support necessary to simply keep a lid on everything. The policy differences between the Democratic and Republicans versions of the legislation are minor (despite Senator Frist's effort to make a huge deal out of them on Today this morning) in part because neither bill had especially huge policy implications. What you're seeing here, however, is the extent to which the GOP is losing control of the situation and playing defense, despite holding the majority.

who has been coiled like a snake ready to strike at the first opportunity to avenge his being replaced by Frist. Ironically, he was right--if Strom Thurmond HAD been elected president, the GOP wouldn't be having all these problems!
