Judge Alito....is this the smoking gun?
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 05:01 PM by spanone
From his lips.....

.~snip~ "I am particularly proud of my contributions in recent cases in which the government has argued in the Supreme Court that racial and ethnic quotas should not be allowed and that the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion," Mr. Alito, who is now a federal appeals court judge, wrote. ~snip~

I believe at that time Roe V Wade had already been decided.

4. This guy must not be allowed on the Supreme Court
I first thought, no big deal, the liberal tide is rising, the SCOTUS doesn't have a history of running counter to overwhelming public opinion and won't really overturn Roe v Wade.

I now think we can't leave it in the hands of overwhelming public opinion. These bastards are on the ropes and we need to hammer them until they go away for a long, long time. We can defeat this guy's nomination, and it is imperative that the Democrats in Congress do whatever it takes.

Filibuster if necessary! I think it won't be, though; the moderate Repubes are running scared, and we as citizens need to let them know their support for this scum will not be forgotten.

5. Take a deep breath...
These bastards are on the ropes? Their support for this scum???

A little harsh, don't you think? Take a deep breath and calm down for a minute. There is little chance this guy will be defeated. The Republicans have the numbers and they may very well have the backbone to actually follow through on this fight.

And I'm all for being passionate about one's beliefs, but sinking to calling people scum and bastards just seems a little childish.

7. Trust me, I didn't have to sink to use that language
The Repubes have brought me down here, and here I will stay until we have a country I can be proud of. Childish yes; wrong no. I will take your comment under advisement.

Until further consideration, I will continue to despise the minority in this country that seeks to subjugate the majority through fear-mongering and lies. This nominee doesn't represent the American populace in any meaningful way, and should be defeated by any means necessary. I also stand by my assertion that the moderate Republicans are getting quite reasonably tired of sucking up to a sinking ship. They have been selling out the long term interests of the US for short term political gain, and it's pretty clear that this particular short term gain wagon is losing its momentum.

You might want to look at the national polling data on abortion to clarify your understanding of where I'm coming from.

Do you have anything real to offer, or just criticisms of my anger?

13. "Abortion as a constitutional right" is not the ultimate issue
The right of privacy to make choices is.

15. We should not judge anyone, and not be judged by others
on what we said or did 20 years ago.

Yes, the other side would call it "flip flop" but we see this as a sign of maturity, as ability to learn.

Oh, I am sure that he still has no respect to women's privacy. But from there to actually reversing Roe or impeding safe and legal abortion there is a leap of faith.

Spencer has been a strong supporter of women's privacy. After all, this is why the rabid Republicans wanted to block him from chairing the Judicial Committee.

I don't say confirm Alito nor filibustering him, yet.

But, please, let's keep things in prospective.

Would anyone here want to be judged on what s/he said 20 years ago? I certainly would not.

Still... inter sting that it was the Reagan library, of all places, that flashed this letter.
