5. I liked the one about hunters getting the day off

In my old school, the opening day of deer season was pretty much a waste, as few high schoolers or teachers showed up. It was also hard to get bus drivers or custodians that day.
So they made it a "Teachers' inservice day" when students weren't required to report, then made attendance for the teachers optional. Worked like a charm. The teachers who didn't hunt had a chance to catch up on their paperwork.
This wasn't done out of 'respect' for hunters, but as a matter of practical necessity.

8. I unfortunately ran across John Kasich talking about this

on his Fox show on Saturday. He said that we were a founded as a "Christian and Jewish nation" and that we should allow them to have an excused absence on that day, but their religion wasn't what this country was based on.

I was amazed at how condescending and just plain WRONG he was. Then I shook my head and remembered who I was listening to.

I always thought this country was founded on genocide of Native Amerians and Africans, human chattle, mass theft of land, plundging of resources, rape, the sale of human like animals, white power and supremacy, subjugation of those people of color and whites who had sympathy with them, among other failures of the human soul.

and Jews, so evidently since the Christian Bible has the old Testament in it, that made at least some of the founding fathers Jewish, to some extent.
