How Different Groups Feel About Bush

By The Associated Press

<snip>

---

IS GEORGE BUSH HONEST OR NOT?

Whites, 46 percent, were more likely than minorities, 31 percent, to say Bush is honest. Just over half of whites said he is not honest, while 69 percent of blacks felt that way. Southerners, 51 percent, were more likely than those in other regions to say Bush is honest. In other regions, it was 40 percent or less. Those who make more than $50,000 a year are more likely than those who make less than that to say Bush is honest.

DOES THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAVE HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS OR NOT?

Suburban men, 53 percent, are more likely than suburban women or those in urban and rural areas to think the administration has high ethical standards. Unmarried women, 25 percent, were least likely to say the administration has high ethical standards. Whites, 44 percent, were more likely than minorities, 31 percent, to say the Bush administration has high ethical standards. White evangelicals, 65 percent, were more likely to say the administration has high ethical standards, while Protestants, 50 percent, and Catholics, 34 percent, were less convinced.

WHY DO PEOPLE APPROVE OF BUSH?

Polling this month has found that 37 percent of Americans say they approve of the job done by President Bush. In response to an open-ended question about why they approved, they were most likely to say they agreed with his policies, approved of his Christian beliefs and his values and liked his policies on fighting terrorism.

WHY DO PEOPLE DISAPPROVE OF BUSH?

Polling this month found that about six in 10 disapprove of the job done by the president. In response to an open-ended question about why they disapproved, a majority mentioned war, and especially the war in Iraq. About a fourth as many mentioned the economy, followed closely by the president breaking his word and being dishonest and mentions of his lack of competence and failure to respond to Hurricane Katrina.

1. What beliefs precisely?
He has hurt the poor, has started an unjust war, has deprived seniors of the health care they've paid for (not honoring one's father and mother exactly), has given us a budget that takes not a whole hell of a lot in taxes from the wealthy, thus shifting the burden onto the workers who earn much less--could B***'s behavior be any more contradictory to the 'love your neighbor, respect your elders, take care of the poor' teachings he is supposed to have absorbed from his religion?

B***'s g-d resembles none that I ever heard of growing up.

2. I don't approve of Bush
because of his anti-Christian beliefs and his values and his failed or non-existant policies for fighting terrorism.

3. How far can you get from any of the tenets...
of christianity, and still call yourself a christian. Bush is not a Christian and does not have Christian beliefs. I heard Jimmy Carter say the other day that he worships the prince of peace, not the prince of preemptive war. Maybe I've missed some passage of the Bible where he endorses it, but I'm also pretty sure Jesus would frown on torturing people in secret prisons.

4. all you have to do is say you are Christian,
you don't actually have to act like one. Puleeze, that wouldn't work for them at all. Think of the money, the sex, the closets with Jeff Gannon, the drugs, the booze, the torture, the war....they aren't giving that up for any religion.

5. I'm a Christian who doesn't believe in attacking a country that
did nothing to us.

I'm a Christian who believes in peacefulness, not provocation.

That crazy guy Jesus felt the same way.

I think bush's "Christian beliefs" are bogus and a political tool and I have those little words in red in the New Testament to prove it.

Anyone who thinks he's following Christ's teachings needs a serious refresher course in what Christ ACTUALLY taught.

It sure wasn't "kill 'em!!!"

10. whether * is a Christian, or anyone is
Christians all around the country will quote from the Bible to support war, homophobia, and tax cuts. Then they'll say that whoever disagrees with them isn't a real Christian.

On DU, people say the ones I'm describing above aren't real Christians. From time to time someone will quote from the Bible to back up that assertion.

So we have two large groups of people who call themselves Christians. Each claim the same sacred text, and each use that text to advance completely different agendas. And each group claims the other one is lying or otherwise insincere.

It sounds to me like it's really two different religions.

And, more importantly, it suggests to me that you can believe anything and call it a religion, and perhaps there's a better way -- one which isn't built on unprovable assertions -- to decide which actions are best for society.
