Andrea Mitchell: I 'Misspoke' on Plame ID

NBC's senior diplomatic correspondent Andrea Mitchell is claiming that her comments have been deliberately distorted in reports covering a 2003 interview where she said Valerie Plame's identity had been "widely known" before her name appeared in a Robert Novak column.

"The fact is that I did not know before the Novak column," she told radio host Don Imus on Thursday.

...

"Do we have any idea how widely known it was in Washington that Joe Wilson's wife worked for the CIA?" she was asked by host Alan Murray in an Oct. 3, 2003 interview on CNBC's "Captial Report."
Mitchell replied: "It was widely known among those of us who cover the intelligence community and who were actively engaged in trying to track down who among the foreign service community was the envoy to Niger. So a number of us began to pick up on that."

Confronted with her comments Thursday morning, the top NBC reporter insisted: " was out of context."

4. In a sense,
it was "widely known" in the months before Novak's article. The reason is because when Cheney and Libby told Karl Rove, he ran with it. Karl told numerous people in the administration and neocon circles. The extent the information spread was actually, as Wilson points out in his book, evidence of the White House's disrespect for classified information.

MITCHELL: Well, which has not happened. But this is (unintelligible). We've got a whole new world of journalism out there where there are people writing blogs where they grab one thing and ignore everything else that I've written and said about this. And it supports their political view. And . . .

IMUS: Bingo.

MITCHELL: Bingo.

Right, Andrea, Bingo. Blame it on the bloggers.

37. Poor Andrea - beset upon by the nasty bloggers
"they grab one thing and ignore everything else that I've written and said about this. And it supports their political view"

So, finally, she doesn't deny saying it (she can't because there's a transcript and internet back-up discussions.) What she said was INCREDIBLY important because it went to the heart of the case - was Plame covert or not? Andrea Mitchell's comment that "it was widely known..." supports her political view, even if it WASN'T widely known.

I don't know what the Bingo things seems to be about. You get accurately quoted saying something you actually said, but if someone quotes it, it's a distortion that supports their political view? (which by the way - didn't she just subtly reveal HER political view?)

I think a lot of people like McClellan and Andrea Mitchell and others were willing to blithely make off the cuff statements and assertions as long as they were comfortable knowing that this story had no legs and would be squashed in the bowels of the Justice Department. Too bad about Fitzgerald upsetting their apple cart.

It's a new day of media accountability FINALLY with the ability of everyday people to do research on the internet and find out what people really said and when they said it. Also, thank God for great sites like Media Matters.

36. She never corrected her reporting on that fake story
I guess newsmax didn't bother to seek out a "clarification." Why, I wonder?

I think of Mitchell's unrepentant reporting on the WH trashing every time I see her. (That, and the fact that after he most recent plastic surgery you could bounce quarters off her face. But I digress)

It seems Mitchell's definition of reporting is "Administration source, whom I've agreed not to name, gossips with me at a party, or calls me in my limo on my way to the way to the day spa."

29. I Saw Her Stupidly Lie on the Air Live
The day of the indictment, all the yakkers were sitting around re-doing what they did with the FL 2000 SCotUS decision, trying to read it on the air FIRST.

While they were waiting for that, (I think she's just DUMB) MITCHELL read from page one of FITZGERALD's letter responding to the CONYERS group who had written him asking for a written report if there were no indictments. She said FITZGERALD was saying there WOULD be a written report. They cut back to Tweety who went on and on with what she said. Then they cut back to her and she---------TURNED THE PAGE------and read the COMPLETE OPPOSITE. Neither she nor Tweety ever acknowledged they had put out WRONG information. They just kept going.

31. Mary Matalan, Karen Huges, Andrea Mitchell and Conduit Rice all have
some interesting history. Was Andrea called to testify before the GJ? Deliberate Distortion is what SHE is quite capable of doing, and has done on numerous occasions.

BTW, I rarely see IMUS (maybe at most a total of 20 times in the past 5 years, which is the time span of my knowledge of his show), but I know that I heard that Mary M. 'bragged' about contributing to Imus's Kiddie Ranch, and I'm reasonably certain that I heard Mitchell confess to this too. Does anyone else know? How can one find out who contributes to this slimeball Imus?

cross examination as I've ever seen. He nails her several times, FORCING her to own up to her own words, while playing sorta coy

am I wrong on this?

I found the whole exchange stunning. She comes completely unglued here, completely contradicting herself WRT who, exactly she was discussing: Wilson, himself, as envoy, or Plane, as CIA operative

Imus just DRAGS it out of her, and she admits it. what a horrendous witness she'd have been. her lawyer would have shat a big bolus over that. she'd better PRAY she's not called in any proceedings.

and, I'll bet BIG BUX that Wilson and his wife are having quite the little intimo over this story, assuming they've seen it.

Joe, hope you've wised up and are checking out these threads, baby

here:

IMUS: Apparently on October 3, 2003, you said it was "widely known" that Joe Wilson's wife worked at the CIA.

MITCHELL: Well, that was out of context.

IMUS: Oh, it was?

MITCHELL: It was out of context.

IMUS: Isn't that always the case?

MITCHELL: Don't you hate it when that happens? The fact is that I did not know - did not know before - did not know before the Novak column. And it was very clear because I had interviewed Joe Wilson several times, including on "Meet the Press."

And in none of those interviews did any of this come up, on or off camera - I have to tell you. The fact is what I was trying to express was that it was widely known that there was an envoy that I was tasking my producers and my researchers and myself to find out who was this secret envoy.

I did not know. We only knew because of an article in the Washington Post by Walter Pincus, and it was followed by Nicholas Kristof, that someone had known in that period.

IMUS: So you didn't say it was "widely known" that his wife worked at the CIA?

MITCHELL: I - I - I said it was widely known that an envoy had gone - let me try to find the quote. But the fact is what I was trying to say in the rest of that sentence - I said we did not know who the envoy was until the Novak column.

IMUS: Did you mention that Wilson or his wife worked at the CIA?

MITCHELL: Yes.

IMUS: Did you mention . . .

MITCHELL: It was in a long interview on CNBC.

IMUS: No, I understand that. But at any point, in any context, did you say that it was either widely known, not known, or whether it was speculated that his wife worked at the CIA.

MITCHELL: I said that it was widely known that - here's the exact quote - I said that it was widely known that Wilson was an envoy and that his wife worked at the CIA. But I was talking about . . .

IMUS: OK, so you did say that. It took me a minute to get that out of you.

MITCHELL: No, I was talking about after the Novak column. And that was not clear. I may have misspoken in October 2003 in that interview.

IMUS: When was the Novak column?

MITHCELL: The Novak column was on the 14th, July 12th or 14th of '03.

IMUS: So this was well after that?

MITCHELL: Well after that. That's why the confusion. I was trying to express what I knew before the Novak column and there was some confusion in that one interview.

IMUS: Who'd you find it out from? Russert?

MITCHELL: I found it out from Novak.

IMUS: Maybe Russert's lying?

MITCHELL: You know Tim Russert doesn't lie.

really....you can have your hackola courtroom penny-dreadfuls....this is the BEST, baby, cause it's total reality, baby!

the BEST!

Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 04:06 AM by Gabi Hayes
dig it....hear the wheels spinning as she tacks her own self on at the end, after realizing she's spilt all the milk WRT to where she ranks on her own reporting itinerary...number three, as an afterthought:

Mitchell: The fact is what I was trying to express was that it was widely known that there was an envoy that I was tasking my producers and my researchers and myself to find out who was this secret envoy.

she probably just tries to memorize all the stuff her underlings give her. and when she starts LYING about it, since she didn't do any of it herself, she's up the creek, bigtime. too fricking bad, scarface!

she's going to make the absolute WORST witness

like I said Joe and Valerie must be in a universe of ecstasy after reading such unprovoked gems of the deepest, darkest revelations of an enemy's innermost thought processes, failings and weaknesses

this is going to be EXCELLENT!

I don't see, though, how they can let either the Wilsons, or, maybe, certain reporters, uh, live, though, after it's become so obvious now, what they're up to
