I'm glad to see DUers supporting GLBTs after the Texas amendment.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 12:04 AM by Harvey Korman
Especially since it was a day of many victories for Dems.

Instead of brushing the amendment aside as an "acceptable loss" that was to be expected, so many of you took a moment to express your support for GLBT DUers. This means a lot, especially since--as many of you will remember--gays and lesbians took the blame from more than a few Dems and liberal pundits after anti-gay amendments were credited with drawing knuckledraggers to the polls in 2004.

So thanks.

And thanks, too, to all the people who were pulling for the Maine prop repealing protections for GLBT people to fail. And to all those who celebrated when it did fail.

As you can see, at this point we're fighting just to keep the protections we've already won. It's a constant onslaught--an attack on the most personal and private aspects of ourselves--and we need straight allies like you more than ever.

Today, I'm proud to be a part of this community.

1. There are no "acceptable losses" when it comes to BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
Some things really ARE "black and white";
the notion that 'ALL humans are created EQUAL' being one of them.

3. Hear hear
It's totally unConstiutional and UnAmerican quite frankly. If you're going to claim "liberty and justice for all" don't be a damn hypocrite about it.

8. Amen.
Lacking that basic stance, a person couldn't POSSIBLY regard themselves as anything close to "liberal."

9. BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS is something this Country seriously
has been in short supply of, for most of it's history! Seems we aren't getting any better at it either. :-)

I believe that ALL humans are created equal.

I am proud to support GLBT rights as they are HUMAN rights.

2. I'm proud to be a part of this community also.
I'm very sad about what happened in Texas.

Somehow, those of us who support human rights will prevail; I just have to have that optimistic attitude.

Someday we'll look back on these dark times just like people do now during the civil rights era and Nixon and all that. Stay strong you guys and know you aren't a lone. :) And yes even some of us straight, white Christians are fighting for you.

28. Yes, exactly.
I'm part of a straight, white, long-married couple (I'm not technically Christian, I'm a Religious Scientist), and I'm a proud vice president of PFLAG.

I'm committed to fighting for marriage equality, have spent a lot of time fighting for it, and will continue to do so.

It is now time for me to gear up to fighting against the nasty amendments they want Californians to vote on in Nov. 2006. I only have a year!

To my GLBT friends, know that we are behind you 110%!

10. "gays and lesbians took the blame
from more than a few Dems and liberal pundits"

I'm sorry if anyone said or even implied that gays were to blame for the 2004 debacle. I didn't see anyone here making that claim, but if you saw different posts, those folks were wrong.

It wasn't gays that were responsible, but homophobic fear mongers.

By the way ... did you see this thread? An excellent rant against Texas followed by a LOT of heartfelt support from the DUers. :-)

15. I must have missed those threads.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 02:39 AM by Behind the Aegis
I did see some support in the Maine posts. However, I know there are SEVERAL non-glbt allies here! There are even more allies-in-training (they are learning the ropes about our community). These are the same people that kept me coming here after the re-selection and the horrid threads that followed for almost two weeks (and chased my partner off this site since then).

So, where as I may have missed these threads, I have NO doubt they are around!

On edit: I gave this thread recommendation number 5! It should be on the greatest page, as it shows what kind of people actually do haunt this place. :)

18. I refuse to blame the victims.
Repukes made the attack on people wanting equality.

Just like a flag-burning amendment, they will use whatever they can to infuriate and get their racist/fundamentalist/bigoted base to come out in droves.

I hope to go to my little brother's wedding, one day. There is NO reason he should be denied the right to be with, and share everything with someone he loves, nor should anyone else.

Sharing of inheritance/estates, hospital visitations, work benefits, all that straight people have/are allowed/take for granted, should be open to ALL.

And if the religious right don't like it, Fuck em.

do what you want with who you want. I couldn't care less. I'm only concerned with MY OWN orgasm.

Sheesh. Anyone hear about the law they wanted to pass AGAINST sodomy, and in the same session they wanted to REPEAL the law against BESTIALITY???

or was that an urban myth...?

22. Yesterday we were having fun with the wording of the amendment
because it showed how stupid the bigots who wrote it really are. However, we also see it as a serious matter.

As a person who was born in Texas, I'm completely disgusted by my birth state and with the many relatives I have there whom I know voted in favor. I don't want to be around them or talk to them.

It boggles my mind that people can be so thoughtless and cruel as to vote for something that takes rights away from others, especially when the others are doing them no harm whatsoever.

Know that there are many of us who are from Texas, or other red states, who do stand up for your rights and for the rights of all.

23. Equal protection under the law.
And the right to believe, profess and worship as one wants.

Even if other Americans do not like what is believed, professed and worshipped. That's what gives us our freedom.

25. I used sui generis' thread here
in my most recent blog post, as well as some data from the Houston Chronicle about how Prop 2 passed so overwhelmingly:

http://brainsandeggs.blogspot.com/2005/11/prop-2-post-analysis.html

It's completely revolting, but we'll get back to work on changing it, one vote at a time.

certify that I am a woman and my husband is a man.

I wonder if already transgendered married folks will have legal problems?

I wonder if someone born with ambiguous genitalia will have any problems?

I am sorry we couldn't do more here to defeat this outrageous proposition.
