Don't be dissin' Prince Charles...
Show me another world figure or leader who uses the word "sustainability" and I'll consider your snarky comments about him. He has matured into a well-balanced and introspective man, despite the unthinkable weirdness of the life thrust upon him. His projects are about designing a better world, and that's something to which we all ought to pay attention.

3. I agree.
Perhaps he was given a bad rap in the 80's/90's ... or perhaps he was FUBAR'd from his family dynamics ... but he has evolved into a rather admirable gent.

William has grown up a good bit too. I think Harry has a little bit way to go, but than again Harry is only in his early twenties.

5. He's a great argument in favor of a 90% estate tax.
The only useful purpose for preserving 'royalty' I can think of is akin to the argument for preserving samples of the Ebola virus ... to study and learn ways of wiping it out.

38. Oh that's just an old wives tale
I would imagine the friction from thighs to ears could cause redness or even chafing over an extended period but earlobe growth? Nope, can't happen; maybe temporary inflammation but nothing long haul.

I'm not a doctor but I've watched many on television.

10. I figure that, even though he is a royal and a public figure, his personal
life is none of my business (feel that way about nearly everyone, except, these days, those smirking, hypocritical, pornographic assholes on the reich)

his interest in the environment, on the other hand, is something in which I do take an interest. I remember watching a program about 8 years ago on his estate at hightower--all organic and sustainable.

27. Take two Kitty Kelly's and call me in the morning
Your opinion of the royals might melt as quickly as the Repubs ratings if you were to pick up a book on the Royals, like Kitty Kelly's. Or really, any reasonably researched history book on WWI and WWII. The House of Windsor has closer ties with Germany than England, and in both World Wars they were a lot closer to linking up with Germany than with the US. Charles has come closest to publicly alienating the Crown from the common man, and support for the monarchy keeps drifting steadily downward as he keeps on with his selfish ways. If it were to be proven that he was involved in plotting the death of Diana, the Royal Family might actually come to an end.
In an age of great advances in the study of the human genome, it would be instructive to actually analyze the blood of Royals everywhere, to see how much of royalty was owed to cousins, siblings, incest and the hardier strains introduced by postal workers, footmen, maids, butlers and the like. It was not all that long ago when America was scandalized by the contempt the royal family showed to Americans, when a prince abdicated the throne to actually marry one. Socially, the royals are as economically desireable as the lamprey is to the fishing industry in the Great Lakes. The mammal dresses better, but it still sucks the life out of its host, like any common parasite. Doctors usually treat parasites by prescribing medicine that eradicates the pest. The mystery is why otherwise rational humans would continue to feed the more extravagant parasite.

28. well put...
and as per original post....If that pompous twit cared one lick about true sustainability, he come out full force behind worldwide hemp production. So until he gets on board, I'll continue to know that his interest in organics is for self serving reasons and a vehicle to pretty up his image abroad.

The royals also need to apologize and come clean over James Hewitt.

33. Welcome,from a newbie too.I wonder
why the Brits keep them? Those royals cost a lot of money!Maybe the Royals bring in more money than they cost in the tourism trade?Or maybe the British people are willing to pay to keep this part of their history alive ,it's really all pomp and no muscle.Regardless,it's the Brits business and they seem to like having a paper monarchy for entertainment purposes.

40. I didn't offer an "opinion of the royals"
in my post, but I maintain that Charles is doing much better with his awkward position than many other elected, selected, appointed, inherited and otherwise chosen leaders. I'm certainly not defending the royals or the monarchy in any way. What disappoints me about many posts here at DU is a kind of gossip-column cattiness about Charles and Camilla, or Diana, or whomever. The fact that Charles is saying what he's saying about energy, urban planning, sustainable growth and the environment is overshadowed by general royal-bashing and attacks on his personal life. This guy didn't choose his station in life, and he struggled to become an adult just as we all must. George Bush, in contrast, actually SOUGHT the job he now has, despite being totally unprepared for it. The way some DUers have lumped the two men together in their derision is myopic and sad.

For starters, he's the real deal when it comes to being a military pilot; i.e. he didn't wander off to the East End on a drunken binge but actually went through pilot training, unlike the esteemed "war hero" occupying the WH currently.
