Anthrax victim's widow frustrated with 'pattern of delay'

Four years later, battle ongoing over inquiry

By John Coté
Staff Writer
Posted November 5 2005

Four years after her husband became the first victim to die in a string of anthrax bioterrorism attacks, Maureen Stevens can still hear his voice.

"I still have his voice on my answering machine -- I want to keep that," Stevens said Friday at her attorney's West Palm Beach office in a rare interview. "I call my phone sometimes."

The Department of Justice earlier this week filed documents with a federal appeals court in Atlanta calling for Stevens' lawsuit to be thrown out as baseless and a threat to "an ongoing nationwide criminal investigation." The court has yet to rule.

She spoke publicly to reporters Friday for the first time in more than two years -- moved by senseless loss and struggling to understand the apparent lack of progress in the investigation. She was critical of the government's unwillingness to provide information.

3. I guess something they never intend to follow up on
that they dropped like a hot potato when it became apparent the Anthrax was US Army grade, and the trail started pointing towards right wingers...

could, technically, qualify as "ongoing".

4. Yeah. The obfuscation is going on.
I've come to regard the FBI as the FBO--federal bureau of obfuscation. Whatever evidence they get their hands on disappears into the dark hole of their bureaucracy never to be seen by the eyes of the people in its original form again. THAT is now and has long been their true function. They're like the little men who come out to clean up with push brooms and dust pans after the elephants have done their dance in the ring.

6. I guess Stevens shouldn't have published photos of the bush
...girls. His killing made the message plain to democratic leadership and the mainstream press when they received their own anthrax mail. The FBI investigation is better called obstruction of justice.

7. I just love it
It's ONLY the FIRST ever bio-attack on US soil, and even 6 months after it, NO ONE in the KKKorporate media would touch it...like it didn't even happen. Scumbags.

15. can't say I blame ya
I was at pretty much ground zero for the now-all-but-forgotten Anthrax attack in the Palm Beaches, but on the flip side, I never get snail mail! But I know this much, ever time I went into a pulbic bathroom that was just freshly cleaned and there was some WHITE POWEDER...I stayed FAR AWAY FROM IT.

And ya know, BUSHitler and co. and their CRYING WOLF and their bogus ass "terra threats" like the one a month or so ago with the NY subway and that was MORE BULLSHIT from these scumbags, they should all go to GitMo, especially since NYC is still suffering PTSD from 9/11 ALONE.

9. Bush et al MIHOP
to enhance the knee knocking effect and cripple the country's ability to think straight after 9/11. No doubt about that one in my mind. Whether they MIHOP on 9/11, I'm not sure, but definitely the anthrax was. That's why they targeted Democrats for the most part. She'll never get the answers. That's in the same category as the JFK assassination documents that were sealed for 75 years so no one can refute that bumbling Warren Report and Arlen Specter's silly magic bullet theory.

10. I'll never forget the unreal anthrax press conference
by Tommy Thompson, Dept of Health etc a week after the anthrax outbreak. The govt had said not one word, given us no direction at all, and the first words out of his mouth are I DID NOT TAKE THIS JOB TO TALK ABOUT ANTHRAX. He was furious. I was shocked. I knew then that something was up.

11. I remember that, too.
He kept saying that the victim must have drunk water from a stream when he took his son to college in NC before he became ill. I kept thinking, how did this creature get this job?

He is a poster child for cronyism.

12. I knew Bob Stevens personally
and he was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Extremely positive, warm, funny and sweet - nice to everyone. People loved him.

He was also one of the best airbrush artists from the old days of the tabloids in America, when they would put two separate celeb photos together.

He simply happened to open that piece of mail with the anthrax by chance - it was not addressed to him.

Yes, he was a tabloid guy, but he was really an artist and a great guy and everyone still misses him.

BTW, the tabs were definitely tamed by the anthrax - they're scared now and even have a photo of Bush in their lobby.
