Playing with fire
America is percieved as the cradle of democracy, from within and without. What would happen if the general american population realized that their system was hijacked? What would happen to world opinion? Think about that for a moment.

We all saw what occured in the days that followed the Baghdad invasion....we saw the looting, the disruption of order - heck the total lack of order.

Republican and democratic politicians are walking a fine line and they know it. It is a fragile thing - society and order. That is why they downplay any wrongdoing in any election cycle as the system itself......I think that is why Kerry took the path he chose.

But, Bushco is so inept. Even controlling all branches of government, they still screwed up. It is almost too much to fathom you know? The Iraq war debacle (and one that I was very vocal against right from the get go) and now if the general population realizes that the very fabric of their democracy is fake......I shudder to think what might occur. It is close now. Societies fabric has worn thin, frayed with big gapping holes. Who will mend it? Who will point out the obvious inconsistancies with the saying on one hand that America does not torture - and yet wants to allow torture to occur anyways? (Cheney today) I cannot in my lifetime ever thought it would come to this. America is supposed to be better than that. It should not even be a necessity to have McCain's bill - you know? But, here we are nontheless, dragged down to the level of the soviets with their gulags and hidden prisons. Who will stand tall and say the Iraq War was wrong, illegitimate and immoral? Who will give Americans a better dream?
Who will take the sobering stand of accountability?

Spin makes the flames grow ever stronger, licking, curling around to engulf us all. The harder they spin, the lower they drag us all....and we know it now.

2. Just remember
that this nation has weathered many crises, including winning a revolution against all odds, a civil war, the Great Depression, 2 world wars, the McCarthy era, the civil rights movement, Watergate. I agree that our situation is grave, and I can't predict what will come to pass. I do, however, take courage from the fact that we have survived many perils and have become stronger for it. I also helps me to remember some advice that I once heard, which is to neither underestimate, nor over-estimate, your enemy.

Which reminds me of my favorite toast, taught to me by my oldest and dearest friend who happens to be an attorney: "Confusion to the enemy!"
