not quite registration, but they make you put in your zip code, year of birth and gender before you can get to any stories.

They had mercifully suspended this irksome feature for the duration of the crisis. Since, to my N.O.-exiled mind, the crisis is not past, and this ought to be a front-burner issue for years to come, I broke with longstanding policy, wussed out and gave them the info.
