More but-but-but Clinton thought Saddam had weapons too....

Democrats Push Big Lie About War
by Allan H. Ryskind

President Bush lied us into war and the revelations produced by the Scooter Libby indictment only confirm this terrible scandal.

That’s the essence of the vicious slur Democrats are hurling at the GOP these days, with Minority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) shutting down the U.S. Senate to dramatize the charge.

The White House, as the Democrats would now have it, had virtually no evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, but the President, Dick Cheney and their gang were so intent on removing Saddam from power they invented facts. And when critics such as Joe Wilson spoke truth to power, the “Scooters” in the administration slimed their reputations.

....

This is unpatriotic mud-slinging, with a touch of Black Helicopter looniness tossed in. To believe that the White House concocted a fable about WMD in Iraq, you would have to believe in a massive conspiracy involving not only the Bush people, but both Bill Clinton’s and George Bush’s CIA director, George Tenet; Bush’s first term secretary of state, Colin Powell; Clinton’s secretary of state, Madeleine Albright; Clinton’s key NSC Persian Gulf adviser, Kenneth Pollack; and numerous WMD experts at the United Nations.

1. I am certain that *IF* the Clinton admin believed that Iraq had WMDs
they were not STUPID ENOUGH to think they were a threat to the continental US, as Condi, Cheney and Co seemed to!

4. They never publicly claimed that.
Though they did express concern, and they kept the inspectors in (as much as practical) to solve the potential problem in a rational way.

14. The Republicans conveniently seem to forget that Clinton
warned Bush about Bin Laden and terrorism being the most important threat at the time that Bush took office. It's called "selective memory".

2. Yes, Clinton did believe Saddam had WMD's
Hence the sanctions, which were working. The occassional bombing raids, which were working. It could be argued that Clinton was responsible for ridding Saddam of those WMD's but no one seems to want to discuss that possibility.

7. Bush's lies are all Clinton's fault.
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 10:54 AM by electropop
Clinton enforced the sanctions and successfully blocked Saddam from rebuilding his WMD programs. So it's Clinton's fault that Bush lied, because if Clinton had just allowed Saddam to go about his work, Bush's WMD claims would have been true. So Bush's lies are all Clinton's fault. The bastard. And he got hummers in the Oval Office, a far more heinous offense than murdering thousands of Americans and Iraqis. :sarcasm:

3. Clinton thought......
that Saddam had all kinds of bad weapons and that is why we had Dessert Fox and bombed the hell out of Saddam in 1998....the right keeps saying that Clinton said Saddam was a threat but those quoates are from 1998, before he bombed Iraq's weapons and the military reported back to Clinton that they got just about everything they intended to destroy!

6. Let us not forget UN Weapons Inspectors
They were saying from the beginning of this war that there just weren't any WMD's like the admin was claiming if memory serves.

5. Yesterday, Wm. Cohen a Republican, and Clinton's secretary of defence
said on CNN that Clinton knew the U.S.A had Saddam contained and it was not necessary to go to war as long as they kept the pressure on....Wolf Blitzer had Cohen on and was giving him the line about "everyone in the world thought there were WMDs".....I heard Clinton say this once, about Saddam being contained, and I wish he would say it whenever he has the chance....Incidentally, since Cohen is a Republican, it cannot be said that he is a Democratic partisan....

8. Before they were bitching about how Clinton didn't care about Iraq
Now, after calling him a liar in every other breath, what Clinton said about Iraq in the '90s is suddenly relevent. Even though Republicans regarded little about what he said at any time.

Neo-Conservatism is a mental disorder.

false information and co-opt the press into making a case for going to war.

11. He's The Critical Difference
One can believe anything, but proving it is something else entirely. THAT'S WHY THE U.N. SENT IN AN INSPECTION TEAM!!!! Verify your beliefs BEFORE you start a war.

13. Time To Shut This Strawman Down COLD!
A few points...if i may:

- The 1998 resolution so many cling to was a paper declaration that came in the wake of a botched CIA clandestine plot in '96 to overthrow Hussein. The new resolution was pushed to "buck up" and restore credibility that had been lost to various Iraqi and Kurdish exile groups that were betrayed in this '96 plot and to end a lot of the infighting between the groups. In essenece it was a lot of words and some money, but that was about it.

- Clinton EXTENDED the No Fly Zones over over 50 percent of Iraq with daily overflights that were keeping constant survellience on the palaces and other suspected WMD sites. Scott Riter addresses how costly the cat & mouse game between the Iraqi government and UNSCOM had become. When Clinton had enough of the games, he BOMBED the suspected palaces that later reports indicate were effective in hurting Iraq's military infrastructure...making boosh's 2003 invasion so much easier. How ironic Repugnicans fail to forget those bombing as they were occuring while a vote was taking place on Clinton's impeachment. It's like that bombing didn't happen and Hussein didn't back down...both happened.

Now either this was "Wag The Dog" as the chickenhawks called this bombing back in '98 or it was part of this pre-emptive doctrine their resolution called for. They can't have it either way...while they try.

17. Clinton never spun BS about IMMINENT NUCLEAR CATASTROPHE
any bushbot that pushes "everybody thought saddam had WMDs" needs to be slapped the hard fact that only the Bush Admin is responsible for the LIE that Saddam had/wanted/was soon gonna get a NUKE.

but I think someone needs to let them know that Clinton isn't President anymore. Maybe it's time someone let them in on that.
