Complaining comes naturally to people. Forums such as these tend to promote controvercial topics where people disagree. Flame wars stay pegged at the top while positive ideas quickly fall.

It's going to take a real effort to change DU and our society. But we just want to complain. Even your own thread got attention because it was a complaint worded strongly. It's simply what our minds latch on to. I hope we can do better. I hope we can do progressive things. Positive contructive things instead of destructive.

Thats the thing. Even if we are busy hating the hatable (is Bushco) it means we are filling our conversation and days with hate. It is becoming what we know and are. Its a cycle and we have to break it.

I wrote a long post to one of these I'm-in-pain threads, but didn't post it.

But here's the point: everyone around here is wounded and pained by the ugliness and vileness and criminality of the past few years.

The negative psychological pressure on people like us is diminishing every day.

But no, I am not one of the people trying to be first in line to air my pain and grievances about what has happened to me just because pressure to suppress it is down. I won't go looking for people to treat me without sympathy and some harshness, then explode at them and DU. I'm not part of that sort of thing. I accept that healing myself is mostly my own business, most of the answers lie inside myself in letting go of things in which lies no lesson worth any further trouble. Most bills must simply be paid.

It's okay for people to do that raging at pain and fears to some bearable degree. Be as human as you must, for better or worse.

But please don't confuse DU with a genuine therapy group. There are plenty of people here as angry and wounded as you are. If you uncork their anger and pain at yourself we can really only stand by and suffer both sides hurting each other and claiming betrayal. Don't up the ante in foolishnesses, please.

In the next year DU is going to be about becoming the grassroots of a governing party and dealing with the trauma of a whole country, it can't become the ballroom of selfpity parties where everyone gets to put on the show and music they want. That's how it is, no one thinks it's good, but that's how it must be for us to do what is best for all. A country of 300 million people is out there, that's whose best interests this place is chartered to be about.

Personally, when someone 'screams abuse' (how condescending and callous) I check it out. Sure it might be bogus, but I thought that is what activists do - look out for their brothers and sisters.

It doesn't matter if it's not a majority - if it's a significant minority, it is a social problem, a community problem.

The REAL problem is that some people want all the benefits of being in a community with none of the responsibility. Where I grew up, in Cook County, this was a REAL problem with the 'DINOs'. Nominally Democrats, but with a really shallow sense of values or convictions.

I've seen PLENTY of hate on these boards. What's more, I know the off-board political context for it.

Denial is NOT in the interests of the Democratic Party. Washing your hands is NOT defending whatever principles the party may have stood for.

When did we get so selfish and insular.

Take responsibility for each other, or go into the party of apathy and hate where you belong.

I have no doubts that there are racists, homophobes, Christian haters, xenophobes, and all other kinds on here, but this is quite far from being a bigoted place.

Hear hear. I have a tale of how I apparently "drove someone off" this board.

A new arrival (70 posts or so) said something equating Muslims with Nazis. "That's pretty offensive," I said; "Islam is a worldwide religion with many colours and stripes, while Nazism is an ideology of choice literally based around racism and hatred." He then revealed that he was Jewish, and stated that he believed, apparently without hyperbole, that every single Palestinian on the planet would kill him and his entire family if given the chance. I told him that, in the area where I live, we have a Muslim school and a Jewish school next door to each other; they both let out at the same time, and they seem to get on fine. He then employed what we shall now call "the Coulter-Tillman defence", and basically refused to believe me.

He then said that he would be leaving DU, employing the classic "Freeper Hate Mailbag" canard that "no dissent from the predominant line of thinking is tolerated on DU". This was from one person - me - simply disagreeing with him in a calm, reasonable way.

I didn't realise I spoke for all of the 17,000 (?) people on DU, but now I know. So you must now check all of your opinions with me for verification before posting, for I, like some liberal Rod Serling, am the Voice of DU!

there is way too much hateful bat-maligning that goes on around here. Bats are very intelligent, shy, eat insects, and are also kind of cute.

I even put up a bat house in my back yard hoping to attract some. So far it hasn't worked though, a fact that eats away at me every second of every day.
