What is it that Matthews knows about Alito?
He just said on MSNBC that 'something is going to break in the next two weeks that some of them (the Gang of 14) are going to find troubling'. It was very cryptic.

1. Totally OT - can't watch Matthews anymore after SNL
All I can hear is Darryl Hammond screaming!

3. LOL! Me too, generally
But I was listening to Lynn Cullen give some play by play and had to turn on the tube to see if Libby's arraignment was on. :)

4. No argument there
But I still think Matthews knows something and you've brought to light something else...does Matthews have a source in Philly that offered up some dirt?

5. Maybe that's why he keeps harping on the Dem "Memo" mentioning "Mob."
Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 10:48 AM by KoKo01
He keeps bringing this up over and over and while it sounds like he's blaming the Democrats I started to wonder last night if it was because he knew something and maybe it wasn't just him harping on Dems but a perverse (Mathews is always perverse) way of focusing attention on it.

Also, it was odd that Howard Dean was attacked by both Tweety and Blitzer the same night about Dems trying to go after Alito being Italian by releasing "Talking Points Memo" saying he let off Mobsters (was it 12 or 21 mob guys..I can't remember). Anyway, Dean just completely blew it off. He didn't back down or affirm or deny the memo...just said "I don't know about it."

Most of us here have found that when we think something is "odd" it turns out to have "legs." We DU'ers have good radar that way from years of watching these characters.

It's possible something has turned up. And, the Dems were smart in releasing the memo...or someone released it blaming it on Dems to alert that more info could be coming.

Wonder what it could be?

13. Did you see Matthews?
Maybe it's just me, but it seemed very clear...he knows something.

When he said something's going to break about this guy in the next two weeks...well, that's pretty specific without being specific.

Something's up (or about to be out).

15. Well, from what I understand of Rove, it would be his style:
"or someone released it blaming it on Dems"

20. That was my first reaction
I didn't see it when Matthews first received the "Democratic Hit Sheet". As others on DU described it, he went from "Where'd this come from? Who sent this?" Straight to assigning it to Democrats. (He's also using suggestive speech about it since. He calls it a "Hit" sheet, references the case about the mob being used, as always includes Alito's Italian heritage.)

But he shows zero evidence of doing any investigation to determine where and from whom it came. One time I heard (somewhere) that it was actually a part of the workproduct in putting something together, not the formal 'hit' sheet. I can see a CON staffer sending this off with a fake faxheader. It's not hard to program faxes and set them up to look like they're from somewhere else at first glance.

6. I have a strange feeling about Alito.
And I don't think his momination is going to be good for Bush in the end? But, I've been wrong before. ;)

7. Alito, the bobble head
Anyone notice how his head bobbles and sways and then ends up leaning to the right most of the time? Wonder what his affliction might be?

8. failure to recuse himself
Alito when seeking confirmation as a circuit judge in 1990 had sworn he would disqualify himself from cases "involving the Vanguard companies, but then refused to do so in the Maharaj case. In fact, he even complained when the case was appealed that "I do not believe that I am required to disqualify myself based on my ownership of the mutual fund shares."

It appears Alito was assigned the case in error, but his failure to recuse himself certainly looks like a significant breach of judicial ethics. By itself it may not be enough to scuttle his nomination, but it's something that definitely should come up in hearings.

11. Funny that you pointed out the head bobble. Sammy boy
was a year ahead of me in high school. When Alito and the monkey turned from the podium and started to walk away after his nomination I was transported back 35 years in time. He hasn't changed a bit, never saw him smile, same schmuck now as then. An Italian American, Catholic from Trenton, NJ, who has forgotten his history and gone over to join the dark side.

14. Did his head bobble then?
I really do wonder what his problem is with his neck or something. Probably has nothing to do with his thinking ability but he does have a problem.

16. His head definitely bobbled in HS. Ran kind of funny, too.
Very smart, 1600 on college boards. If my fading memory serves me correctly, I think he pointed out an error on the math portion of the cb's. Smart, but strange.

19. Hmmm, then we could be missing the human factor here
Doesn't smile, is strange, mind apparently like a steel trap. Sounds like an unbending mind set. Definitely not a Leonardo De Vinci. Not an inquisitive mind. Just what we need. Some more of my way or the highway - or - you peons don't understand so let me tell/explain to you how it should be done. Thanks for the info Malachi.
