Keep Investigating, Fitz
Robert Dreyfuss
October 28, 2005
...Fitzgerald can choose much more. He can choose to investigate the entire spider’s web of scandals that all overlap in what we ought to start calling Iraqgate.

He can investigate not only the outing of Wilson, but its root cause: the mythmaking about Iraq’s nonexistent nuclear program. And he doesn’t have to stop with the Niger uranium angle, a thread much easier to follow now that La Repubblica has uncorked a lot on the Italian end of that one. He can also investigate the parallel myths of the aluminum tubes, looking at who in the administration’s Office of Special Plans, the Iraqi National Congress, the American Enterprise Institute (see: Michael Ledeen) and other neocon-sponsored entities might have forged documents, passed on false reports and spread alarming bits of nonsense—intentionally—that helped Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld and Condi Rice issue exaggerated warnings to Americans about Iraqi mushroom clouds.

He can investigate the creation of the Counterterrorism Evaluation Group, the forerunner of the Office of Special Plans, and its first two staffers, David Wurmser and Mike Maloof. They, both friends of Richard Perle’s, spun tall tales that helped Bush, Cheney and the propaganda-minded White House Iraq Group link Saddam Hussein (falsely) to Al Qaeda.

He can investigate the burgeoning Larry Franklin scandal involving the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). In fact, how can he investigate Rove, Libby and Co. without overlapping their nefarious activities with the Office of Special Plans and the trips to Italy and other places in Western Europe by Ledeen and the OSP’s Franklin and Harold Rhode? The Ledeen who apparently turns up in the Niger hoax is the selfsame Ledeen who bundled Franklin and Rhode off to Europe to meet the lying Manucher Ghorbanifar. It sure looks like the same scandal to me.

...Robert Dreyfuss is the author of Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam (Henry Holt/Metropolitan Books, 2005). Dreyfuss is a freelance writer based in Alexandria, Va., who specializes in politics and national security issues. He is a contributing editor at The Nation, a contributing writer at Mother Jones, a senior correspondent for The American Prospect, and a frequent contributor to Rolling Stone.

1. He can investigate, but can he prove it all???
Jonathan Alter in Newsweek says it's "The conventional wisdom in Washington this week is that Karl Rove is out of the woods."

He says that the naming of Plame might be a no-no under a Clinton executive order, but it's not criminal.

"Because Rove’s apparent violation is covered by executive order, not legislated law, the issue of his security clearance is unlikely to wind up in criminal court. But he may face a civil suit from the Wilsons, who could seek damages because of the damage done to Plame’s CIA career by the leak."

2. Then what's the point of security clearances?
I find this very hard to believe.

7. I found this info through Google
"Executive Orders do not require Congressional approval to take effect but they have the same legal weight as laws passed by Congress. The President's source of authority to issue Executive Orders can be found in the Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution which grants to the President the "executive Power." Section 3 of Article II further directs the President to "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed." To implement or execute the laws of the land, Presidents give direction and guidance to Executive Branch agencies and departments, often in the form of Executive Orders."

8. Interesting...and actually, Bush issued an executive order on maintaining
confidentiality of sources as well (don't recall the number, there was a thread about it some time back). It actually REQUIRES Bush to take action against any of his people who may have leaked. This isn't the small thing that some in the RW are trying to pretend it is.

4. The Dreyfus article goes way beyond Plame...that's the whole point.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 10:38 PM by Wordie
Dreyfus contends that all these "gates" are connected: Plame-gate, Niger-Uranium-gate, Franklin/AIPAC-gate, and so on...

Dreyfus wrote a great article. Give it a try, you'll like it! And I'm not so certain that there will be nothing more for Rove. He needs to protect his job, as there are calls for his ouster. He isn't out of the woods yet.

>Fitzgerald can choose much more. He can choose to investigate the entire spider’s web of scandals that all overlap in what we ought to start calling Iraqgate.<

I was doing some reading on this earlier today. According to firedoglake's blog (which I am heartily enjoying these days,) "Fitzgerald was smart enough to go to school on Lawrence Walsh's mistakes with Iran Contra and eventually sent a letter telling everyone in congress to get off his back," (http://firedoglake.blogspot.com.) In other words, like he said last Friday, it's not up to him to determine whether the Iraq War intelligence was cooked. It's up to Congress. In my humble opinion, he called their asses out, and Senator Reid was more than happy to take on that little job. In the meantime, America's Hottest Prosecutor (or, as Beausoir calls him, Adorkable,) is rubbing sand out of his eyes and trying to get to the truth about who, what, when, where and why.

If I can think of anything at this point, I'm thinking about the following: Let the truth come out. All of it.

Julie
