Who is "The Last Great American?"

Hey people. If you've never heard it, Five for Fighting did a song called "The Last Great American" for his great album America Town, released sometime in 2000. Download it. Here are the lyrics:

"Mr. Merry cries in his coffin

Who's Mr. Merry to you? Who's "the last great American?" The songwriter says it's nobody in particular when he wrote it, but I'd like to hear your thoughts, DUers.
