Asia Times has 3 articles about Plamegate, saying:

Hoodwinked in Washington and Damascus

The unraveling of the 'Cheney cabol'

Smoking guns and red herrings

------

Hoodwinked:

-snip-

Even in a reasonably imperfect world, though justice takes a long time in coming, it often does arrive. Yes, even in Washington.

-snip-

Just days before the indictments were handed down, Libby admitted that Cheney – not reporters, as he had indicated under oath – had told him about Plame. The Sunday morning Washington talk shows included a good deal of speculation about whether Cheney knew of Libby's vendetta to undermine Wilson.

The same sort of speculation exists vis-a-vis Assad. Was he fully aware of his brother and brother-in-law's operations? As he told CNN's Christiane Amanpour shortly before Mehlis delivered his report, "You cannot be a dictator and not be in control."
-snip-
------------------------------

unraveling:

The "Cheney cabal" that Lawrence Wilkerson, aide to (former secretary of state) Colin Powell, has recently accused of "highjacking" US foreign policy, might eventually be brought to light, now that one of its chief architects, I Lewis "Scooter" Libby, is facing a public trial and the prospect of a stiff sentence. He has been indicted on three counts of perjury and lying under oath about the disclosure of the name of an undercover Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent to the media.

-snip-

As Mann points out, even though the initial military target of the US in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks was Afghanistan, Wolfowitz (then deputy defense secretary) and Libby "laid out the case for the invasion of Iraq just one week after the Twin Towers fell".

Libby was also reportedly responsible for the first draft of Powell's now infamous presentation to the United Nations a month before the US invasion of Iraq. Powell discarded that draft and developed his own, carefully checking and reworking the questionable intelligence data. As it turned out, even that intelligence data was way off the mark. Only recently, Powell admitted during a TV interview that he would be long remembered for that erroneous speech.
-snip-
--------------------------

Smoking:

The Grand Jury supervised by US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has returned an indictment charging Vice President Dick Cheney's top aide and reputed "alter-ego", I Lewis "Scooter" Libby, with perjury, obstruction of justice and false statements to a grand jury.

-snip-

But accepting responsibility for the CIA leak would have put quite a damper on the Bush reelection campaign. So, with his usual Janus-like approach to every threat, the president managed to declare himself above such petty politics while allowing surrogates to spread disinformation. In other words, the administration has attempted to derail the prosecution in precisely the same way it tried to derail ex-ambassador Joe Wilson's (Plame's husband) credibility over weapons of mass destruction in the first place.

1. You're right: the world is watching.
If any of them were thinking that 'crooks win every time', maybe this will be a wake-up call.

The mess has just started.

6. Yes, Pepe is one of the best writers in the world on American topics.
His series on traveling across the U.S. is not to be missed.

5. Asia Times was my salvation in the leadup to the war, and an eye opener
to the rest of the world, especially a big part of it that is seldom covered by the Iron Curtain of stupidity that is called American journalism. It was fascinating to get the Asian perspective on Bush's war. Their reporting was excellent; their opinion pieces in depth and brilliant. It was like they were speaking from a distant planet, watching us from light years away, appalled at the madness of the U.S. government, analyzing it with precision and full of detail, but also regarding it with sadness and disappointment.

I realized, at some point, that what I was reading was simply GOOD JOURNALISM, such as I had been used to when I was young. You EXPECTED good reporting; you EXPECTED opinion to be in depth and sometimes brilliant. You EXPECTED reputable news organizations to be appalled at government madness; to analyze it well; and to express disappointment and sadness at catastrophic failure.

Our news monopolies have become such degraded rags and TV news such airbrushed fascist crap that Asia Times seemed to be coming from another galaxy.
