"Fitzgerald has Scooter's ass in a sling," says former Ken Starr Deputy
<snip>

Libby also faces the prospect of being squeezed by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald to give up the names of others involved in the leak.

"Fitzgerald has Scooter's ass in a sling," said Solomon Wisenberg, a former deputy to independent counsel Ken Starr, who investigated former President Bill Clinton. "He'd be remiss if he didn't squeeze Libby to get higher-ups involved. Potentially there is more, clearly."

<snip>

Two sources involved in the investigation believe Fitzgerald may use the charges to pressure Libby into turning witness against other officials - even Cheney.

"Either knew what Libby was up to or he wasn't paying attention," said a key Bush source.

9. Hooters or Scooters?
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 06:04 AM by Hubert Flottz
What Clinton did was "A high Crime and Misdemeanor," What Scooter and accomplices did was TREASON.

Where's the Morality, Honor and "Dignatude" in that?

11. Hooters is out of bounds for Scooter, he of lame legs.
Treasonous bastard knew exactly what he was doing and tried to cover it up.

Of course its safe to say he is protecting others but I think in the end...he will sing a song of six pence to Fitz to avoid the Butt Slammer Bubba in Leavenworth

2. "Scooter" is covering up for Cheney.......
no doubt about it. I doubt "Scooter" (what 54 year old man in their right mind allows himself to be referred to as "Scooter" anyway?) will ever rat out his long time pal and dark overlord. Scooter will go to jail for Cheney, he sees it a noble cause to protect Mr. Warmth from the slings and arrows of public humiliation.
"Scooter" takes one for the team so the dark and insidious PNAC agenda can continue on unabated.

3. ya' really think?
He could get 30 years. Faced with that prospect, do you think he'll take one for the team? What if he got the 30 years. His life is essentially over.

I don't see it, myself. In my opinion, when it gets to this stage, it's every man for himself.

4. No. He would never get thirty years and if he did somehow it would
give Bush every reason to pardon him. That's the problem. I don't think he will turn.

16. ah, but does Libby see it that way?
Things might look entirely different from his perspective, and that's the perspective that counts.

Libby knows full well how deep this scandal runs. He knows how serious it is and how it could very well get the long-term sentences. In the overall scheme of things, 30 years is not out of the question.

On the other hand, bush's approval ratings are so in the tank now that he has nothing to lose by pardoning Libby.

20. But if he is pardoned too soon, he can then be subpeonaed
and he had better not lie, or he goes BACK TO JAIL.

He could end up in a revolving door. And there are only so many times he can go to the pardon well.

He'll flip if the squeeze is done right. No continuances, swiftly to justice, jailed pending appeal....you can make it VERY unpleasant.

Ask Susan McDougal--they got her but good. She was a strong one, though, and she wasn't looking at the same amount of time.

8. Wouldn't someone have to actually
LOCATE Cheney in order to indict? All he has to do is go to his underground cover never to be seen again. Kind of like . um . others.

5. I don't think Libby will flip until after he gets convicted
It is only when he is facing the reality of 30 years in jail that he may decide to cooperate in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Libby won't talk until then!

6. Hmmm, seems to me that Fitzgerald is good at turning people.
Look he never would have gotten Libby if Judy hadn't turned. I think once Libby realizes he is taking the heat for everyone, he will turn like the worm he is.

7. The indictment pretty clearly lays out that Libby did disclose classified
info, but no charge on that one yet. I think Fitz is using it for leverage. There's also the possiblity that he can prove the outing of Plame and make that charge stick - there's info in the indictment to lay the foundation.

Then there's Treason, death penalty during war time.

10. Look at Illinois.Gov.Ryan was the 66th to be indicted there.
In a scandal that started with a lower level political hack selling drivers' licenses to illegal aliens, the Chicago prosecutor's office was able to get people to give evidence against each other while he worked his way up the food chain until eventually he got the Governor. In Libby's case, the $1.25 Million fine could easily be taken care of by GOP colleagues, or being appointed to a couple of corporate boards.

(Did y'all know that Tom Ridge now collects $100,000 a year by sitting on the Board of Home Depot? And that's low compared to some boards. Met a guy last year who gets a quarter mill. per year for sitting on a high-tech board of a company which has never declared a profit.)

But doing the jail time is something that will only go away if he spills the facts about bigger fish.

Step by step, inch by inch, Fitzgerald is still investigating.
