Rate it up: 'Official A' Stands Out in Indictment
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 08:18 PM by tuvor
WASHINGTON - In a sign of the trouble lingering for the Bush administration, the indictment handed up Friday in the
CIA leak probe refers to someone at the White House known as "Official A."

The unidentified official could become a courtroom witness against I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who left his job as vice presidential aide shortly after his indictment on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury.

Several other unnamed officials mentioned in the indictment were identified Friday afternoon by Justice Department officials.

But not "Official A."

(They imply it's rove.)

6. Kos has an interesting post on Official Asshole
Here's a primer of who's who in the Libby Indictment, via the AP.

According to the AP again, "Official A" has been confirmed by "three people close to the investigation" to be Karl Rove.

"Official A" was the only figure not identified in the indictment by name or title. While names were generally not used in the indictment, specific titles were used to identify other key figures, except in that one particular case. From the indictment:

On or about July 10 or July 11, 2003, LIBBY spoke to a senior official in the White House ("Official A") who advised LIBBY of a conversation Official A had earlier that week with columnist Robert Novak in which Wilson's wife was discussed as a CIA employee involved in Wilson's trip. LIBBY was advised by Official A that Novak would be writing a story about Wilson's wife.

That's not particularly more damning than the rest of the indictment, which refers to figures like Dick Cheney, Ari Fleisher, Mark Grossman and Catherine Martin, as well as reporters such as Cooper and Miller, in sometimes roundabout but identifiable ways.

So why the sensitivity around the identity of "Official A"? Puzzling, to say the least. What's going on with "Official A" that isn't going on with anyone else named in the report?

12. Because Rove's still playing let's make a deal and charges are still
possible? So he remains unidentified while leverage is being played out to cut a deal, indict, whatever?

Just wondering. It only takes two to make a conspiracy....wonder if Official A could shed light on any organized activity to leak Plame's identity and job? And what that information could be worth?

We know Rove talked to Novak. Reportedly after Novak's already got the story from another source. (And we still don't know who Novak's first source is, do we?)

Got a feeling there's at least another shoe waiting to drop...

8. "Late Friday, three people . . .identified Rove as Official A"
<snip>

Late Friday, three people close to the investigation, each asking to remain unidentified because of grand jury secrecy, identified Rove as Official A.

Who is Official A? Only unnamed sources will say
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — In a sign of the trouble lingering for the Bush administration, the indictment handed up today in the CIA leak probe refers to someone at the White House known as "Official A."

The unidentified official could become a courtroom witness against I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who left his job as vice presidential aide shortly after his indictment on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury.

Several other unnamed officials mentioned in the indictment were identified today afternoon by Justice Department officials.

But not "Official A."

The mysterious official is identified in the indictment only as "a senior official in the White House."
