ANALYSIS

By THOMAS M. DeFRANK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

WASHINGTON - The Bush presidency already resembled Fiasco Central well before Harriet Miers' bungled nomination reached its point of incineration.

Now Bush faces the herculean - but not hopeless - task of reversing a free fall that not only threatens his legacy but also his ability to be taken seriously the next three years.

Overnight is always a lifetime in politics, so Bush's political resuscitation is still entirely possible, improbable as it seems at the moment.

"He's not a lame duck," one of his closest political counselors said yesterday. "He's a clumsy duck. This can still be fixed."

Yet some of Bush's most trusted advisers believe his political viability is dangerously near a tipping point.

"He is right back to where he was on Sept. 10, 2001," a former White House official said in amazement at Bush's decline.

5. Hoping for another horrible disaster to improve the numbers?
He is right back to where he was on Sept. 10, 2001," a former White House official said in amazement at Bush's decline.

I don't think it would work this time.

7. They have no solutions
They have no idea how to actually govern - smear others and deflect blame is 100% of the WH effort and there is no willingness or competence to do anything else.

They are committed to policies that will accelerate the decline. Not only do they not work, everything they try is counter-productive by design because if it does not enrich a handful of cronies, they are not interested.

8. What legacy would that be?
Oh, you mean the one that puts him right up there on a par with history's most irresponsible 'leaders' and dangerous war criminals? That would be OK with me. Give that old Idi Abush anytime.

12. Not a lame duck, not a clumsy duck. A Dead Duck.
He's roasted, basted and quartered. He's done...over...kaput.

Problem is, we're stuck with the unburied corpse until Inauguration Day, 2009.

13. "Now Bush faces the herculean ...task..."
Wrong adjective/analogy....

More like Sisyphean. He shall never be able to escape the burden of dishonest acts of stupidity.
