Good orgs to join that require no donation?

I am poor. But I want to join some orgs. I will donate as much as I can when I can. I have previously been a donater to Amnesty UK, the Dogs Trust, Greenpeace, WWF, and some other smatterings.

I am interested in the broad spectrum of left/progressive/peace orgs - can anyboy here recommend some for me to join that require no fee up front? I am dying to join the ACLU so I can be a 'card-carrying member of the ACLU'.

I also have little cash to donate, but when I do it goes here. A bunny here, a piglet there, it all adds up.
