Harriet Miers was nominated so Bush can now appoint a white male
Major lightbulb just came on when I started to think of who Bush might appoint now for the open slot.

There is historical significance to this open slot since the person who gets the nomination will be replacing the first woman nominated to the Supreme Court. Bush's first appointee - John Roberts was a white male. So there was pressure for Bush to nominate someone other than a white male, but there probably wasn't anyone qualified for the Bush Regime that wasn't both white and male.

So they tossed in Harriet Miers who's only possible qualification for the seat was the fact that she was a woman. Now that Miers has withdrawn, the Bush Regime can appoint a white male to the position and justify it by saying "we appointed a woman but you all complained about it"

13. Great minds think alike
I was left scratching my head when he nominated Miers. Now that he pleased his wife by nominating a woman, he can get the son of satan on the bench.

9. I'm sure you have hit upon it
It will get interesting to say the least. Just how far can the US go in torturing people Mr. Gonzalez? How much torture is too much?

3. Hmmmmm
That sort of presupposes that their goal is to nominate a white male. I can think of a few round the bend whack jobs who went up for judgeships lately who are female - the two Ediths for example.

10. He's not going to nominate Brown or Owens
They are spoiled goods with all the problems both had getting their nomination. THe trick to neo-con supreme court nomination is selecting stealth candidates with little judicial experience. A previous replier to this post mentioned Ted Olsen and I can see that one

:scared:

12. I think he just made a dumb arrogent move
I think Bush is in a bit of a time warp, back to the day when he could have done anythoing and known it would get through.

I also think he was just engaging in more of his typical Brown-style cronyism. "I like her, an she thinks like me, so she's qualified for the Supreme Court."
