American Muslim Convert Stabbed, Called ‘Terrorist Pig’
Anti-muslim terror continues in the U.S.

WASHINGTON, October 7 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – In a new "Islamophobic attacks" – on the rise since the 9-11 attacks, a U.S. convert wearing hijab was stabbed in Virginia by a White male teenager shouting "you terrorist pig," before running away, said the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Tuesday, October 7.

...snip...
"Unfortunately, we are seeing a rise in Islamophobic attacks that parallels
the ongoing right-wing campaign to demonize Muslims and Islam," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad.

"This smear campaign is having an impact on those in our society vulnerable to the siren song of hatred and prejudice.

2. Internment inches closer

There will not be much objection heard from the affluent voting classes.

Some may feel a slight discomfort as neighbors and co-workers are led away. This site will have a small flurry of posts on the subject, but the majority will agree that "bothered' is too strong a word to describe their feelings.

I am so damn sick of people getting tagged as terrorists. Heaven forbid there is another 9/11 style attack in America. If that happens then all Arabs and Muslims in the U.S. are screwed. Blind, mindless violence and going with primal instincts instead of intelligence seems to be the law of the land now.

4. CAIR has blood on its hands
If American Muslims marhed after 9/11 in condmenation of the attacks the backlash wouldn't have been nearly as bad as it has been.

I am not a Muslim but "morans" think I am. Thanks to these bigots I'll probably be moving to Canada in a few years.

This bigotry is mostly right-wing but it is not limited to it. You'll find plenty of anti-Islam sentiment right here on DU.

And sadly, it stems on a person's bias particularly when it comes to America's Middle East policies. I do not think that Arabs or Muslims always hated America like the right-wing would want people to think. It is just one-sided attitudes that has gotten us in trouble and I fear may get us further into trouble. If it continues, I maybe right behind you towards America's exit door.

6. I take it you didn't notice all the announcements, etc
Sorry--Muslims died in the twin towers along with everyone else--take a look at the list of the dead and/or missing.

Look at the announcements by CAIR, the vigils held throughout the country in mosques, sorry-- there was nothing Muslims in the US could do to stop the vitriol-- it was something that they have continued to bear to the best of their ability.

I agree-- there will always be hatred for various segments of society. DU has it's own issues to deal with, as we all are all well aware.

19. You may not agree with me but....
the U.S. foreign policy as it stands with the Israel-Palestinian issue is just too biased towards the Israelis and that is one of the biggest reasons many Arabs hate our guts. America should have been even-handed in dealing with this issue. I had a lot of hope when Clinton got Arafat and Rabin together, but sadly, the right-wing in the U.S. and Israel as well as the Islamic militants in the Arab world were going to have none of that so it was derailed. The supposed "road map for peace" is a map that goes nowhere. It offers too much for Israel and too little for the Palestinians. And now that we invaded Iraq, that Arab anger has been inflamed. Americans will not be welcome in the Middle East for many years to come.

Makes sense this is coming from a Clark supporter.

It is NOT the responsibility of a muslim/jew/or any other minority to prove themselves to racists.

However, it IS the responsibility of racists to follow the laws in this nation.

I would say that racists have not done enough to prevent themselves from comitting crimes against those they feel have not "done everything they could to mitigate" their hate.

The American media did not cover it in most cases, or readers chose to ignore it when it was.

Perhaps you will find enough condimnation there.

But what truly shocks me is your seeming attitude that the American muslim community somehow deserves this treatment. That violence is a just desert because you thought that there was not enough outcry from the muslim community. Did you ever do a simple google to see if there was any?

Many germans felt the jews got what they deserved too. Thankfully history has proven them wrong.

I'm of South Asian descent. I hate CAIR and co. for failing to deal with the PR problems created by 9/11. How many times did someone from CAIR or the AMC say "We condemn it BUT...look at the root causes"? Do you realize how much damage that did??????? They should have uneqivocally denounced them instead of acting as moutpieces of the Arabs. A national march would have done wonders...

The sad fact is that most people don't know about the condemnations(look at what Freepers say about Muslims). The only way to get the message across to the public is through something that would be the #1 national story. Only a national Muslim march could accomplish that...

54. To jumper, I believe in free speech, and I do not hit ALERT on posts

However, I would like to ask you, with all respect, to consider the implications of declaring that a non-profit organization "has blood on its hands."

If you made such a statement in "meatspace," I believe that it would constitute a legally actionalble statement, if the victim chose to pursue it through the courts.

Although blaming Muslims in general for the 9-11 events enjoys great popularity in the US, the fact is that it has not been established with any degree of credibility who planned, executed and profited from the 9-11 events.

The bush regime prefers that these events not be looked into too closely, so an independent and thorough investigation is unlikely at this time.

That being said, common sense tells us that blaming any ethnic or religious group is to say the least, misguided.

75. anti-Muslim anti-Brown sentiment
I think are 2 differnt problems with the same root. The root is of course prejudice. Anti-brown sentiment is already greatly entrenched in this country, The Islamic boogyman is a new spectre being used to keep people afraid.

The only way to fight this is through tollerance on our part and to keep trying to remind others that we are a single family of humanity.

I've been thinking about your suggestion of a muslim march, and I wonder if it wouldn't have hurt more than helped after 9/11. Just envision a couple hundred thousand muslims marching on washingto while the fear and horror of 9/11 was still fresh in the minds of americans. I think it would have turned bloody fast, and the media would have blamed the muslims in the march.

Education, tollerance and persistance is the key here.

If they were able to convince more people they were loyal the discrimination and hatred of them would decline.

A Muslim march would greatly reduce the level of discrimination against them. Many people are on the fence and this would sway a lot of them onto the right side.

Racist? Islam is a religion, not a race.

Talk to me.

Believe me, you do NOT want Muslims to march to show loyalty to America.

You're probably too young to remember it, but a whole mess of black folks marched to show their loyalty to America a long time ago, across a bridge down in Alabama, and again up to Washington, DC.

Most likely we have different ideas about what America is and what constitutes loyalty to it.

If I were able, I'd show my loyalty to America by marching the entire PNAC oligarchy off to the Hague, nationalizing the oil companies, putting the defense countries to work making something useful instead of weapons, and call in international monitors to hold free and open elections where EVERYBODY voted.

Apparently not, since no Fat Wah has been issued for the man (Bin laden) who done more damage to Islam than any man in history.

Perhaps this is because Bin Laden represents the essence of islam.

NO Muslim leader has issued a fatwa against Bin Laden? Not even American and other Western Muslim leaders?

I wouldn't go as far as saying that if they haven't done it Bin Laden represents Islam but it would mean that a subtantial number of Muslims sympathize with Bin Laden. Hence it was too politically costly for leaders to issue a fatwa against him.

The only other incident I know of was again some stupid piece of poo vandalized a buddhist temple thinking it was a mosque.
Ignorance is a terrible, terrible thing.

35. I couldn't agree more. Ignorance is the enemy of mankind.
This thread depresses me to no end. We should save our anger for the truly deserving, like Limbaugh (and yes, OSAMA et al). I don't even know why I am wasting my time with this.

41. No it is not...
a waste of time, some ppl will make you angry and others will reach out, so I think it is good and not wasteful. Certain issues really get to us and we misunderstand what it is exactly others are saying.
So we you should reach out to them. Well that's just my opinion, what do I know anyway.

66. Fatima, did you and your fellow muslims ever hold rallies against 9-11?
NO.

It's so easy to rally against Israel, but not for your country.

I have no sympathy.

69. I'm not a Muslim but I suffer because of that fact
You probably are suffering from it too, unless you're a very light-skinned person of Iranian descent.

That does raise a lot of questions. Muslim organizations can march against Israel and march against war in Iraq but they couldn't march to show support for America to help them.

This isn't politically correct but the sad fact is that Muslim organizations are run by fundies(Just like most religious organizations) who care more about being mouthpieces of the Arabs than America. Look at the ISNA conventions for the past two years. They merely echoed the talking points of the Arabs leagues both times, with apparently no understanding that it would damage their community. :eyes:

In Oakland, nearly 250 people with anti-war signs marched halfway around Lake Merritt and attended a memorial gathering with East Bay Muslims at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California.

The Oakland march began with Moina Noor, director of American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism, condemning the Sept. 11 attacks as "an act of criminal and brutal aggression against our nation." The attacks also amounted to "the hijacking of our religion in the name of God, Islam and Muhammad, our beloved prophet."

28. How American Muslims responded to 9/11
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 11:44 PM by PsychoDad
http://www.mediamonitors.net/riadabdelkarim3.html

On September 11, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest grassroots American Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, distributed a statement which read: "We condemn in the strongest terms possible what are apparently vicious and cowardly acts of terrorism against innocent civilians. We join with all Americans in calling for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators. No cause could ever be assisted by such immoral acts. All members of the Muslim community are asked to offer whatever help they can to the victims and their families. Muslim medical professionals should go to the scenes of the attacks to offer aid and comfort to the victims."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2003-09-03-sikh-shooting_x.htm

Man goes on trial for killing Arizona Sikh after Sept. 11

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting an Indian immigrant four days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was acting out of a rage fueled by prejudice, a prosecutor said in opening statements of the man's trial. The man's attorney argued mental illness was to blame.

On the day of the terrorist attacks, Frank Silva Roque was overheard saying he would shoot people whom he described with an ethnic slur, prosecutor Vince Imbordino said as the murder trial opened Tuesday.

60. Most Muslims in this country are not Arab
and most Arabs here are not Muslim. Many are Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi and Palestinian Christian. Surprise!

I believe the numbers for Bush were because many Muslims are conservative socially (I am liberal) , but be sure Bush will not enjoy the same popularity again in 2004.

Methinks the Gitmo situation and the mass roundups and deportations, not to mention two illegal wars on Muslims, might have something to do with it.

So don't worry.

Arab, Muslim Vote Still in Play for Next Year's Election

by Churck McCutcheon
Religion News Service

WASHINGTON -- Despite Muslims' and Arab-Americans' frustration with President Bush over what they perceive as unfair treatment, Democrats shouldn't automatically expect those voters to swing their way in 2004, Arab and Muslim leaders say.

Bush captured a majority of the Arab and Muslim vote in 2000 after he joined GOP activists in reaching out to their leaders. But many of those leaders have been upset by the Justice Department's treatment of Muslims and
Arabs since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

...

The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, the largest
Islamic civil liberties group, released a poll after the 2000 election showing that 72 percent of Muslims voted for Bush, 8 percent for Democrat Al Gore and 19 percent for Ralph Nader, a Lebanese-American.

Only around 25 percent of Arab-Americans are Muslims. Many of the rest of Muslims are African-Americans who are strongly inclined to back Democrats -- a fact that some activists say increases the likelihood that the Muslim
and Arab vote could be split next year....

87. this article is not good support for your assertion
The only folks in the article that said Arabs and Muslims might favor Bush were Spence Abraham and Darrell Issa :puke: :puke:

The other contention of the article was Democrats did not necessarily own Arab/Muslim support, but that didn't mean they'd vote for Bush either.

From the CAIR Website:

"The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) is a non-profit, grassroots membership organization. We have headquarters in Washington, D.C., and CAIR chapters across America. CAIR was established to promote a positive image of Islam and Muslims in America. We believe misrepresentations of Islam are most often the result of ignorance on the part of non-Muslims and reluctance on the part of Muslims to articulate their case."

Both Hizbollah and Hamas engage in this perfidious activity, there are reports that the political wings of both have even been instrumental in getting medical care to Palestinian civilians in direct defiance of Israeli orders that they be left to bleed to death.

84. No, sir, I do not. Since their cause is that those kids get food and water

To oppose that cause is anti-Americanism at its most classic.

A very smart man named Langston Hughes said it much better than I can:

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath--
America will be!

I never said that. However, they are still terrorist groups. CAIR having an executive director who supports Islamic extremist terrorists hurts CAIR's cause.

Being a terrorist still has something of a stigma with bush regime loyalists and zionist/raptuready extremists.

The rest of the world, as you might expect, has a different view.
