Wilma: did you notice, when this storm was
a Cat. 4-5 in MX, none of these fearless weathermen made their way to MX, other than Susan Candiotti from CNN?
Now it's 24/7 coverage. Yeah, MX vs. US, but there were many US citizens in MX when Wilma hit.

1. Yes
But I understand it, because they're American newscasters working for American stations.

2. I always get a kick out of them.
They're getting blown all over the place and they tell everyone to stay indoors. :wtf:

3. Friday night on DU I looked back 3-4 pages of threads and there
was only one thread, an LBN one, on Wilma as it was giving its full fury on the Yucatan. I was going to post a thread on the subject entitled "the blacks of New Orleans and the Mayans of the Yucatan" and had started writing but decided not to post it for some reason. Oh yeah, I got distracted by indictment talk just like everyone else.

4. I've seen your posts, expat. I've been as worried about MX
as you've been. The Riviera Maya is close to my heart, and I know Playa has incurred a lot of damage as well as many other areas. Also, our MXPat who rode Wilma out on Isla Mujeres. :-(

6. We watched the whole time on TWC.
I was floored when I heard they got over 64" of rain. It's all too sad. :(

I'm sure that soon we'll hear from her. Until then, *fingers crossed and praying*

10. No.
Here's the latest thread. Maybe it's simple, like her power is out. We can hope that's all it is.

14. I just hope the federal government of Mexico doesn't just put all their
attention into getting tourists out and then neglect the Mayan poor. There is a national election coming up in Mexico.... November I think, so hopefully Vincente will get some help down there quick.

When I was down there, I was facinated that the Yucatan did not come under complete Mexican control until the late 1940's...and even then the Maya waged sporadic guerrilla attacks on Mexican forces into the 1950's.

Britain had a consulate to the Mayan kingdom until like 1905 or something like that. Interesting.

mexicoxpat posted this to my Wilma thread just before the TS force winds hit.

Isla Mujeres!

i am still here on the island of isla...tried to get off last night and this morning...but could not..ferry no longer running...so, i am stuck to ride it out. my daughter called to say that isla mujeres was completely evacuated except for officials..saw it on weather channel, but not true. Shelters set up at schools on the island, but i think i am better to stay where i am..about mid island...the neighbors next door have a second story..so i will stay with them...already raining and high winds here.

16. Last I saw, she posted Thursday night before Wilma hit
Isla Mujeres, where she lives. HAven't heard a word, but I'm sure the power is nonexistent. We're all anxious to hear something, expecially after we heard Isla got over 5 feet of rain, and I don't think that included the storm surge. :scared:

13. no, not me. i am not an expat. go figure.
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 02:01 AM by expatriot
i have a misleading screen name for which I have apologized for perfusely. it was orignially suppose to be a sort of anti-nationalist statement and a play on words of expatriate... it is kind of cool to think that people have a romanticized image of me being an expat when I am actually posting from my trailer in Yuma, Ariz.

you are thinking of mexicoexpat.... I hope s/he is alright but I am sure s/he has no electricity yet.

5. Will daddy *
and Clinton step up to the plate and help our neighbors to the south? Anyone who has been to the Yucatan knows what beautiful people they are. They need our help.

17. Katrina tore through Central America and no one in the US said a word
some of those countries got ravaged by several hurricanes. No one seemed to care. Not a peep.

Anyway, I remember one of the recent ones ripped through Cuba and some other Central American countries as it went through the Gulf, and no one really cared at all.
