Jimmy Swaggart's church files $24 million defamation / extortion suit

BATON ROUGE, La. Jimmy Swaggart's Baton Rouge church has filed suit against a group of investors who were looking for a hospital site, claiming defamation caused the church to lose 24 million dollars in rental income.

Family Worship Center Church and Health Science Park settled a lawsuit earlier this month over lease and purchase options on church-owned property. Health Science Park says it is searching for a new home for the Earl K. Long Medical Center, the state's aging charity hospital in Baton Rouge.

In that dispute, Health Science Park claimed the church was trying to back out of the options deal in order to take advantage of the high lease prices being charged after Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans.

But in the new lawsuit filed Friday, Family Worship Center says those allegations constituted defamation and extortion. Neither side has commented.

I can't say for sure, but I expect ol' Jimmy's like the rest of them -- he just doesn't have a national stage due to that little setback with the prostitute nearly 20 years ago.
