Drug addiction is not funny
I'll try this again, with the PG-13 filter on:

After seeing all these threads out here "joking" about Rush Limbaugh's drug addiction, I felt this needed to be said.

Drug Addiction, like any other illness, is not funny.

Yeah, Rush has made statements about drug use/abuse in the past, but the man has a disease, for crying out loud. It's not some laughing matter, like chocking on a pretzel because you're too stupid to know how to chew your food properly. It's a DISEASE which will eventually KILL HIM and bring heartache to his innocent family, if left untreated.

Sure, Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot, but what kind of moral ground does that put US on if we want him killed? How does that make us better than he is, or what he is about?

Am I taking this a little personally? Maybe. I've had friends AND family members who have drug problems. I had a good fried who was addicted to heroin (which is an opiate, like Oxycontin), and the addiction and its detox are not funny, not in the least. I've had mental issues in my past which left me unable to work, and now take a combination of three drugs just to keep the wolves at bay-- and even then it's STILL hard to get out of bed every morning.

Yes, maybe the "Karma" or the irony (the real kind, not the Allanis Morrisette variety) of the situation may be funny, but come on here people-- let's show the world how we're bigger people than that. Let's show them that, unlike the Freepers, we actually CARE about other people, even if we disagree with them on 99.9999% of the issues.

Making fun of an addict, no matter how reprehensible s/he may be, is IMHO on par with making fun of a cancer patient, or a schizophrenic, or somebody who's mentally retarded. It's sick, it's wrong, and certainly NOT something I would expect from people who claim to be members of a "compassionate" political party.

</end rant>

1. I CAN be quite funny, but I rank it closer to mimes.

Does the phrase 'caveat emptor' mean anything to you?

He got himself hooked. Now he's in trouble because of it.

Big whoop.

2. It's OK to Make Fun of Hypocricy, Though, Right?
I sure hope so. That's what I'm doing in my Rush Limbaugh posts.

Hell, I've come close to opiate addiction in my life. If I had the means and opportunity that Limbaugh has I would almost certainly be an addict.

But then again, I haven't made millions of dollars ranting about (among other things) how "maggot infested, dope smoking hippies" should be locked up. Matter of fact, I've never thought that anyone with a drug problem should be in jail.

So I'm nice and smug in my ridicule of Limbaugh.

14. Wonder if Limpmember kept up the hate filled rants, not because he really
believed in them, but because it kept dope in his veins? Addicts frequently do incredible violence, to themselves, strangers, and even family members, for a fix. Et tu "rush"?

13. Rush himself doesn't think that
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 06:48 PM by Chovexani
As evidenced by his heartless mockery of River Phoenix, Kurt Cobain, and the millions of others whose addictions took their lives. Maybe I'm callous, but I believe a person ought to be held to the same standards they hold others to.

FWIW, my brother's a recovering drug addict and I have many unrepentant alcoholics in my family. I've seen what addiction does to people up close. That's exactly why I have no problems not feeling sympathy for this asswipe. He has made a fortune and supported his own habit by demonizing and mocking others with the same goddamn habit.

Fuck him, and may he get what he deserves.

PS. I ain't a Christian, and I think turning the other cheek only gets you slapped in the other.

18. His hypocrisy is the joke and I think EVERYTHING is fair game
when it comes to humor, including addiction and cancer. (I am a recovering heroin addict (years of recovery) and my father has Cancer).

It is not up to you to decide for everyone else at DU what is, or is not funny, or grist for the humor mill. I honestly LAUGHED out loud when I heard his announcement today. He was doing what any good junky would do, enter rehab before the shit hits the fan. He is trying to avoid jail time. I think it is funny. I won't judge you for thinking it is not. Unlike you I allow for differences in humor.

I think ALL drugs should be legal, but I hope he does years of hard time as that is what he has preached for others.

19. Rush and his addiction
Grant you, Drug addiction is NOT FUNNY. If you've listened to Rush at all, though, drug addicts "ought to be sent up the river."

While it isn't funny that Rush has admitted to being part of a demographic he frequently disses and pisses on, it IS funny to listen to the spin and bullshit on RR (RIGHT RADIO)- the same assholes who routinely crucify with vigor the slightest transgression, disease or otherwise of anyone but their own ilk. The spin-du-jour is all about "just how addictive ARE these medications??" with all the sensitivity they can muster.

Barf.

Sorry if I dont have an ounce of compassion for this man, but I dont. He has been nothing but a viscious hypocritical loudmouth for years. He'll get the best treatment money can buy, ulike most people with addictions. So I wouldnt waste my tears on him. What is funny, is how Rush beats to death the "character" issue, never fails to berate others for their "failings". Appears he has some of his own. Rush had to be "outed", he did not disclose this on his own. So you cant even give him credit for that. This man has be given much in life. Maybe too much. We all have our demons in life, he'll just to handle his. Drug addiction isnt funny, people who cant afford to get help with it, isnt funny, either. But a loud mouth hypocrite caught with his pants down is.

34. I agree
In the final analysis this is serious business and I wish him well on a personal basis with the challenges he faces. I hope he comes to terms with the character and personality issues that left him open for this.

However he has been a pompous moralizing blowhard with a "holier than thou" complex for the last 20+ years. Justice is served when people who set themselves so far above others in their personal self-estimation are brought to see and admit the error of their ways. There is joy in seeing justice done.

What I heard of what Rush said gives me little confidence he has gotten there yet. But he has challenges yet to face.

37. I'm an alcoholic & I think Rush's addiction is fucking HILARIOUS
Of course it is the beauty and elegance of Karma (and rarely do we see it work its magic so quickly) that brings a smile to my face.

It is the silliness inherent in an obese, egomaniacal food and pill addict who mocks the "weakness" of others who suffer from the very disease he shares, that brings a smile to my face.

It is the image of Rush sitting in 12-step meetings for the rest of his life, eating crow and seeking humility, that brings a smile to my face.

It is the thought of Rush crying into his pillow in his prison bed that brings a smile to my face.

It is the folly and foolishness of the human race, writ large in the life stories of countless hypocritical Republicans, that brings a smile to my face.

And I hope to some day bump into Rush in a "meeting." What a sweet moment that would be.

So, dammit, let me laugh and enjoy yet another priceless "Exshellnshe in Broadcashting" moment. The right wingers will be pumping crocodile tears aplenty for Rush; he doesn't need any from me.
