A Reminder To All DUers (TruthIsAll... are you out there?)
Mark Crispin Miller forwarded this email to all on his mailing list. Thought I'd share it as a reminder that we don't operate in some kind of fishbowl. What happens here at DU reaches well beyond our boards. I am proud to be a member of this community. Hope you all are as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark, not sure if you were aware of the work of 'TruthIsAll' over at
Democratic Underground;

"The analysis of exit polls and documented fraud in this election
began on the Internet. A number of academics posted detailed work
showing the near-impossible odds of Bush overcoming deficits in the
state exit polls and the National Exit Polls. Much of this analysis
comes from “TruthIsAll” (TIA), a poster on DemocraticUnderground.Com.
TIA has a background and several degrees in applied mathematics.
Using various elements of the national and state exit polls and other
data sources, he produces results that are thorough, detailed, sober
and compelling. He shows ALL data and calculations, while encouraging
others to check his math. Only once did he make a minor math error,
after asking DUers to check his calculation of probability that at
least 16 states would deviate beyond their exit poll margin of error
and go for Bush. The answer turned out to be one in 19 trillion! The
debates on DemocraticUnderground’s “2004: Election Results and
Discussion” forum are legendary and have attracted observers from all
over the Net."

It's pretty compelling, here is the bulk of his posts collected;

-----------

If you have some colleagues who are intensely math-savvy, and haven't
jumped on the Fraud bandwagon because they need to see some numbers,
here they are.

8. Mangled cliche alert!
Mark Crispin Miller forwarded this email to all on his mailing list. Thought I'd share it as a reminder that we don't operate in some kind of fishbowl. What happens here at DU reaches well beyond our boards.

If things we do here are noticed and make waves in the outside world, it means that we DO live "in the fishbowl." You can SEE the fish. Through the glass. Of the fisbowl. The whole point of a fishbowl is so you can see your fish.

Maybe you could have gone with "...a reminder that we're not just big fish in a small pond" if your heart was set on a fish reference? Although I think "operate in some kind of vacuum" was the particular cliche you were aiming for, and missed.

9. Actually
Waves made in a fishbowl stay in the fishbowl if you catch my drift...

But if it makes you feel better apply whatever cliché you deem appropriate.

15. Check out the Excel Interactive Election Model !
Here's the link to the model:

http://us.share.geocities.com/electionmodel/InteractiveElectionSimulation.xls

It's a piece of cake to run and
illustrates clearly why the myriad pre and post election polls provide overwhelming evidence that Bush stole the election.

31. No. Troll is a freeper who likes to cause problems here.
So TIA was TSed because people disagreed with his analysis? That's odd. Some people here have ALWAYS disagreed that the elections were stolen.

28. Dissenting opinion here. I never found his posts compelling and often
I found them to be outright misleading. I challenged many of the early ones (where he had so-called "electronic" states showing a greater exit poll swing than "paper ballot" states - totally bogus) and finally got some admissions and cagey answers that didn't really add up. This stuff was getting repeated in *a lot* of places and in my opinion was casting a long shadow of doubt on all other evidence of fraud simply by association. If it was ever seriously scrutinized it would have been torn apart in short order.

Now, I'm not totally against the idea that there was serious fraud in the election (of course there was, but I'm talking about fraud with the electronic voting machines and exit polls), but I never found his ubiquitous posts compelling, in fact their sheer volume I found entirely suspicious, as if he was convincing people by sheer repetition, and I never liked the all capital letters.

Again, one person's opinion.

36. There are specific rules against personal attacts.
Do not post personal attacks or engage in name-calling against other individual members of this discussion board. Even very mild personal attacks are forbidden.

37. Check the rules vs. my post.
Specifically:

"You are, of course, permitted to point out when a post is untrue or factually incorrect."

I actually tried to edit my post to omit the parts about TIA's behavior that might border-line violate the rules of Civility here, but it was too late. Other than that, I stand by my post and do not think it is a personal attack. I just happen to think his research was bogus, as in factually incorrect, and I believe this and the manner in which the "data" were presented, did a lot a hurt the cause of voting reform and the problems of the 2004 Election.

33. Da rules.
In case anyone missed it, take a look at the DU rules:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules_detailed.html

There is only one sentence in all of the detailed rules that is bolded, and that's in the section titled "Civility."

35. Italy and Switzerland
"For over a hundred years, Northern Italy experienced unparalleled conflict, death, and destruction and it produced the Renaissance, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, etc. Over the same period, Switzerland experienced peace, prosperity and civil comity and...it produced the cuckoo clock."
