Anybody Know anything about Canby, MN? The Good, Bad, & Ugly Please.
Found a business for sale there.

I don't know the area and would like to hear about it.

I live in NC and am looking to make a move.

Thanks

1. Some info here;
http://www.city-data.com/city/Canby-Minnesota.html

Canby is near the S. Dak. border; I think the closest largish city would be Sioux Falls. The terrain is generally flat, and it tends to be windy (there are some of those big wind generators in the area that they use to generate electricity). Mostly farmland (wheat, corn, soybeans).

2. Sounds "Fargo"-esque
The movie, not the actual city ...

But, hey, I don't know anything about it, so don't listen to me.

4. I lived near St. Cloud, about 100 miles NE of there for a couple years
and driven through Canby many times but I don't really know much about the town itself...I will say that I liked most things about the area except for the winters....they are BRUTAL. There are 2 seasons up there: winter and road repair. But good people around there.

5. Nice small town
Just under 2000 residents. Farm based economy. Population is aging and is on a slow decline. Canby sits alongside the Buffalo Ridge and is a couple of miles from a nice a man-made lake/rec area.

The countryside is agricultural - prairie. Lots of wide open space. Canby has a K-12 school and also a small tech school (what used to be called a vo-tech). There is a 25 bed hospital. The population is almost all white.

There are banks, a public library, one (I think) grocery store, and several churches (Lutheran predominates). It is a fairly conservative area but not totally.

Sioux Falls, pop. 130,000, is about 1 1/2 hours away. Minneapolis/St. Paul is about 3 hours away.

I grew up not far from there.

6. Is the Vo-Tech/Tech college still there?
Had cousins that went there in the 1970's. Never heard anything bad about the town.

8. The Minnesota Prarie is beautiful
I live about 80 miles east of Canby. Some of my favorite people live in that area. This is not suburban dreck, but true rural living. The area has some very progressive people, active in sustainable farming, conservation, working artists, musicians, writers, etc. (Robert Bly lived here for many years, Bill Holm still does.) This area is far enough from the city that people make their own fun and are not terribly concerned about what's happening at the mall. It's certainly not for everyone, but it's pretty damn nice.

9. Near Walnut Grove
If you're familiar with Little House on the Prairie (though times are a little different these days, I assume ...). Even though I think (could be wrong) that Little House on the Prairie was actually filmed in Southern California, the terrain depicted in the series is quite similar.
