Film shows US soldiers burning Taliban corpses

The US and Afghan governments are investigating claims that American soldiers in Afghanistan burnt the corpses of two Taliban militants, then taunted other Islamic fighters about the burning, a desecration of Muslim custom.

The alleged incident was apparently filmed by a freelance photojournalist embedded with a US Army unit in the hills near the southern city of Kandahar this month. Its authenticity does not appear to be in serious question.

US military commanders in Afghanistan called the episode "repugnant". They said the Army's criminal investigation division was considering charges that included "burning of dead enemy combatant bodies under inappropriate circumstances". In Kabul, the Afghan government of Hamid Karzai insisted that those responsible must be punished. "We strongly condemn any disrespect to human bodies, regardless of whether they are those of enemies or friends," a spokesman said.

The footage, aired by the Australian SBS network, was taken by Stephen Dupont, an Australian journalist with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. It shows a group of soldiers watching as two corpses a few yards away are consumed in flames.

Two soldiers with American accents then reportedly sent taunting messages apparently directed at a nearby village the soldiers seemed to believe had been sheltering the insurgents.

4. It's unfortunate but
given the history to date of our troops' behavior (which is typically encouraged if not ordered by their superiors), people are going to have a tough time giving them the benefit of the doubt. Doesn't mean that's right, it's just the way things are.

By the way, enjoy your stay here. I do hope the best for your son.

7. actually it's pretty clear
SGT JIM BAKER Attention, Taliban, you are all cowardly dogs. You allowed your fighters to be laid down facing west and burned. You are too scared to come down and retrieve their bodies. This just proves you are the lady boys we always believed you to be.

Australia is an ally - the reporter was covering his own countries' soldiers in the region and that negates pretty much the rest of your points.

The documentary evidence provided by the Australian reporters indicates there was a clear violation of the Geneva Convention. We are talking about a major Australian Network here - a country that is headed by a hawk named Howard. I don't think they are publishing lies. Why would they? I give the Australian media more credit than that... actually more credit than the US media in general.

This is the 60 Minutes of Australia.

Dateline, which began in 1984, is Australia's longest-running international current affairs program. It has a well-earned reputation for authoritative and incisive reporting.

Fronted by one of Australia's best known television journalists, George Negus, Dateline also boasts a line-up of experienced reporters - winning many international and domestic awards for excellence in journalism.

This video above is from the US media - OLBERMANN/MSNBC. It shows the same evidence in the film above - but it's censored.

8. Strategy: Anger The Unfindable Enemy So Much He Attacks You
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 08:43 AM by ThomWV
So the point is to commit an act so atrocious that it incites people to take up arms against you as a strategy to pursue the war in Afghanistan. Create enemies and then kill them. Follow that up with desicration of the bodies of the dead in order to create more enemies, which you can then kill.

What have we become?
