NEWSCASTERS! Sorry If My Compulsion Is Showing & This Is Probably
so silly on a relative scale, BUT I just feel compelled to make this point!!

As Wilma info is being spread, I again am hearing a sound that I successfully IGNORED last year, but can't seem to control this time around.

Regardless of How or What the pronunciation was in the past, the current way to say Punta Gorda is PUNT-A Gorda! Not POOOONTA Gorda, as I keep hearing over and over on CNN, MSNBC et al!

Yes, I know it's really mundane, but I just couldn't help myself. I live right up the road and every time I hear it, it's like finger nails on a blackboard!

SILLY ME!!

2. Really? I've always heard it pronounced the pooonta way.
Maybe they like saying it that way because it rhymes with Pooooontang. :-)

3. Actually, in Spanish it would be pronounced Poonta Gorda.
Perhaps, the residents choose to not pronounce it in Spanish.

5. Yeh, try saying "Ponce de Leon" in Atlanta using the Spanish pronunciation
You'd get some strange looks.
:D

12. I don't know about you, but I'm getting hurricane fatigue
I thought, like you, we were past the worst of it. I'm getting closer to getting out of dodge and moving to the mountains or something. Good luck!

13. Just Got Baqck Here....
and saw your message. I've been telling my husband for about 9 months now, let's got West... very West! First stop for me is Northwest, like Oregon then Washington state! If the economy holds on long enough we are selling some land in North Port and want to buy a motor home.

Since he retired a little early not long ago, I've been pushing hard to get "on the road!"

And yes, ENOUGH with hurricanes, looks like a STALL won't be happening. I'm still holding out and hoping this one will fizzle! It's headed right towards us!

4. I feel your pain...the proper pronunciation of Biloxi is "Bill-UX-ee"
but almost all non-Mississippians say "Bill-OX-ee." Trivial, but irritating nonetheless.

10. I swear, it's because they all vacation at Punta Cana in the Dominican...
... and they just think Punta Gorda is pronounced the same way. :-)
