Veteran: Don’t trust recruiters:

Local man says he was misled on education benefits, had to fight for what he was promised

By Ben Raymond Lode
The Springfield News

Many who join the military do so because they want to serve their country.

But most also sign up with an expectation that they will have access to educational benefits, both during active duty and after their service has ended.

Matt Buss, who now lives in Springfield and works at Country Coach in Junction City, was one of those who entered the National Guard with high hopes of being able to use his military educational benefits to better his life.

But as events beyond his own control would prove, taking advantage of benefits he thought he had rightfully earned proved harder than he had ever imagined.

2. A Lifetime of Indentured Service
"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. . . . inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and . . . degeneracy of manners and of morals. . . . No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare. . . .

The separation of the power of declaring war from that of conducting it, is wisely contrived to exclude the danger of its being declared for the sake of its being conducted.

The separation of the power of raising armies from the power of commanding them, is intended to prevent the raising of armies for the sake of commanding them.

The separation of the power of creating offices from that of filling them, is an essential guard against the temptation to create offices for the sake of gratifying favourites or multiplying dependents.

- James Madison, Letters and Other Writings of James Madison

'Stop Loss' is the method being employed to force continued service from soldiers who have done their duty, honorably, as the case may be.

Consider Emiliano Santiago v. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Santiago did his 8 year commitment, and was then presented with an extension from his original release date of 2004 to 2031.

If the powers that be consider Santiago's service essential, they can keep him until he is 52 years old.

Recruitment is bad enough when the current administration is engaged in a highly questionable war, how can the DOD possibly believe it's going to get any better when they can't honestly tell a recruit when his/her term of service will end?

Just something to think about if someone you know and care about is considering signing that dotted line.

3. Has anyone ever cited the 13th Amendment?
Stop Loss is involuntary servitude.
