http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/1005/17reed.htmlUsing money from a gambling services company, Republican strategist Ralph Reed helped wage a direct-mail campaign against 10 GOP members of Congress who voted in favor of a ban on Internet gambling in 2000, according to The Washington Post.
In an article that reported new details to a story first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Post reported Sunday that some of the money flowed from eLottery Inc., a Connecticut firm eager to help state lotteries sell tickets over the Internet, to one of two companies affiliated with Reed. The Post report cited e-mails, faxes and other documents.
Other funds to combat the gambling ban were filtered to Reed, a former head of the Christian Coalition, through the books of an anti-tax organization run by activist Grover Norquist, the Post reported. The same organization was used to funnel money to Reed from an Indian tribe with casino interests to fight gambling measures in Alabama.
ELottery was a client of Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a close friend of Reed's who is the subject of several federal investigations.
