1. There is a forum called Tom Coyote
... populated by all kinds of free geeks who will give you specifics on how to clean your pc. (do a google)

Registration is free, and the programs they direct you to are, as well.

Good luck !

2. Er...
...buy a Mac?

Sorry. Had to do it.

I'm sure there are folks here who can help. Do you have McAfee or Norton? If all else fails, you could always re-format.

3. More info
What OS are you using? What evidence do you have that this is a virus as opposed to say, a hardware failure? Can you boot into Safe Mode? If you are certain this is a virus, do you know which one? And so on.

I'll keep an eye on this thread for replies. We'll get you fixed up.

7. It was identified by Norton. My husband could isolate it on a
list of programs. It was the only new program as all the rest came on the computer. He found it but could not delete it.

13. Good start
What was the program that was running? I mean, what is the name that shows up on the running programs list?

Norton sometimes has trouble getting rid of viruses that other anti-virus programs work fine on. Some have been mentioned elsewhere in this thread and that would certainly be something to try. I don't recall if anyone mentioned AVG as an alternative to Norton but it's a good one and it's free. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

15. I had the same problem.
Got notified by my virus software that I had a trojan. Could find it but could not delete it. FINALLY figured out that we had to disable the virus protection temporarily to delete the quarantined virus. The anti-virus stuff does not want you to accidentally open a virus that has been quarantined so you can turn it off, delete it, then turn your protection back on.

8. download CounterSpy!!
I downloaded this as a free trial for 15 days. I ran it on my laptop that was running really lousy and it found a trojan and I deleted it with this program.

Ad-aware, Spybot nor Norton AV had detected it.

If you download this and opt to not keep it, be sure to delete the program BEFORE the 15-day trial period is up. If you don't it will create problems as it goes in to update itself everyday.

CounterSpy can be downloaded for trial at: www.download.com or you can search for it on google.com.

Best of luck to you!

9. Download free version of McAfee and run it.
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 03:45 PM by longship
or some other reputable anti-virus with free download. (NOT Norton rubbish.)

If that doesn't work, you might have to buy an anti-virus proggy. Just buy the basic w/o all the bells and whistles.

Virus protection software is a racket. It's too expensive. It installs rubbishy resident software which gobbles both bandwidth and CPU cycles. It instills paranoia for something which is easily curable (Stop opening suspect e-mails and turn off auto attachment open.). Plus, there is no access to source code or peer review for a product which desparately needs both.

Stop using Microsoft client software!!! Get FireFox browser. Find a non-Mikeysoft e-mail client.

Or, simply run Linux or Mac instead of WinBlows.

when I had crazy adware and some trojans. It has some good tools you can look into including a TrojanScan and some online virus scanners. The page I'm linking to specifically gives you some step by step instruction on how to eradicate some of the junk that can get into your computer.

16. Critical Windows patch may wreak PC havoc "breaking news"" cnet
A Microsoft patch meant to fix critical security flaws in Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is causing trouble for some users, the company said Friday.

The patch was released Tuesday to fix four Windows flaws, including one that experts predict will be exploited by a worm in the coming days. The flaw, tagged "critical" by Microsoft, lies in a Windows component for transaction processing called the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MSDTC.

Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said.>>>>snip
