Study turns pot wisdom on head

While other studies have shown that periodic use of marijuana can cause memory loss and impair learning and a host of other health problems down the road, new research suggests the drug could have some benefits when administered regularly in a highly potent form.

Most "drugs of abuse" such as alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine suppress growth of new brain cells. However, researchers found that cannabinoids promoted generation of new neurons in rats' hippocampuses.

Hippocampuses are the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, and the study held true for either plant-derived or the synthetic version of cannabinoids.

Alaska has very liberal marijuana laws as a result of the 1975 case of Ravin v. State, which ruled that the privacy clause in our state constitution guarantees the right to privacy in one's home. As the law here now stands, it is legal to have up to four ounces of marijuana in your home for your "personal" use, and as long as you're not into some sort of major commercial operation (which they will still bust on occasion), the law here pretty much leaves people alone. Consequently, the locals have worked on their horticultural skills, and very, very little of the herb is imported. The Matanuska Valley is known for more than just big vegetables. :hippie:

28. They are molecularly identical
Marinol is synthetic THC and it is molecularly identical to natural THC the same way the synthetic heroin in Oxycotin is identical to natural heroin.

The problem with Marinol is that THC overloads the cannabinoid receptors and it can be very hard to deal with. That is why many people will swear by cannabis and badmouth their prescription Marinol. Cannabis with its other cannabinoids acts to block some receptors so that the experience is not overwhelming.

primarily, its effects are largely subdued as opposed to the real deal. I am also beginning to read disparaging reports about Sativex (minor side-effects of administering the drug). Also, I have heard both drugs have dosage issues as well (onset, duration).

Sadly, I feel legalization is a pipe dream :eyes: right now as self-medication would be financially devastating to the drug companies, and many fundie-types are beating the drums of pharmakeia and putting the fear of evil into the masses.

56. Big problems with Sativex is cost
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 10:40 PM by firefox
Allison Myrden is someone that gained fame in Canada over the medical cannabis issue as she was drug into it with her MS. GW Pharm uses clones so that all generations have constant levels of cannabinoids. Sativex blends plants high in THC and plants high in CBD so that both cannabinoids are almost equal.

Allison was given Sativex and a bottle of that normally would cost $125 Canadian plus 7% GMT and it last her 2 and 1/2 days. That is very expensive to say the least.

http://www.medpot.net/forums/ is a forum out of Canada owned and operated by Marc Paquette who was part of Parker/Turmel/Paquette that led to the striking down of the possession laws in Canada on what Turmel calls Terry Parker Day. I think that is August 1, 2001. They are all going back to court over the situation in Canada concerning the medpot program screwed up by Health Canada. Anyway, you can join the forum, and Marc will probably answer your questions personally. Allison is also a member.

I will say that the overwhelming belief of the medpot community is that cannabis, smoked or non, is superior to Sativex. But really one of those superior benefits is cost and no matter how you demonize smoking, it offers the fastest of relief that of course could be equalled with vaporizing. There are other things besides 66 cannabinoids in cannabis too that may contribute to who knows what. See comment43- http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread20726.shtml#43

There is a big thing within the medpot community to find the best strains for particular health problems. That is what Steve Tuck was all about. There was also a compassion club on Vancouver Island out to do real research along those lines and they got busted by the feds this year.

25. Sativex is a cannabis tincture legal in Canada
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 08:55 PM by firefox
Sativex is an extract of cannabis in an alcohol solution that is made by G W Pharmaceuticals in England. It is legal in Canada and was approved for one condition associated with MS. This is the GW Pharma website- http://www.gwpharm.com/ There was a woman from Ireland with MS that died last year that started thc4MS where they distributed cannabis chocolate- http://www.thc4ms.org/

My sister has MS and I am more than furious with the prohibition that has blocked all the research on cannabis for all this time employing the Schedule 1 classification which is an outright lie.

What is sad is that THC, even if it were some deadly poison, might not be needed to benefit some illnesses. It is Dr. Russo from Montana and researcher with GW Pharm that theorizes that migraines might be caused of cannabinoid deficiency. Pot is supposed to work miracles on migraines, but I have not read research concerning effectiveness without THC.

Natural cannabinoids present in the brain are called anandamides which derives from the Greek word for "bliss".

The sadest part of prohibiting medical cannabis, including research using the Schedule One Lie, is that cannabis should have never been made illegal in the first place.

60. Bingo......
Sovereignty is what the debate is about now, not drugs. The Canadian government is under a great deal of pressure from their citizens to keep Emery in the country, and from the DEA to lay down and let Emery be extradited. Recently, Emery has been trying to hammer out a deal in which he'll plead guilty to Canadian charges and thusly avoid a possible life sentence here in the US. The DEA, to say the least, is not pleased with this prospect.

Thing is, Emery has been totally above boards about his sale of seeds. He admits to it freely and says that that Canadian govt has joyfully accepted taxes from the income from his seed sales. And Emery has not lived large on the profits he's garnered from his commercial activities. He's dumped almost all the profits he's made back into political parties and candidates that support legalization of MJ, in Canada as well as here in the US. Marc has none of the trappings of a drug kingpin. He has no car, he lives in a modest apartment in what is considered to be the "bad" part of Vancouver, and only takes a pittance of a salary.

PS: Thanks for the pic ID. I thought it looked familiar.

59. Big question?
I personally believe that cannabis laws are dead in Canada and I wrote about it in this thread at HempCity- http://www.hempcity.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=517&start=30 Of course the government claims that when the courts changed a few sections of the Medical Marijuana Access Regulations that it somehow legislated new laws to replace the ones already struck down by the courts. I believe this to be one of the greatest conspiracies ever, but the government has not yet been pinned. It is the subject of great interest at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/MedPot-discuss/messages which is lead by John "The Engineer" Turmel.

You probably saw pictures of Blunt Brothers in Vancouver that had a mysterious fire last year that damaged the bookstore of Marc Emery, publisher of Cannabis Culter and owner of Pottv.com, that were in that building.

British Columbia is famous for its BC bud and pot use is so pervasive that anyone with any sense knows that the battle to continue prohibition is futile in BC. I have read that one in seven houses grows marijuana in BC and it is their largest crop. Vancouver has a real problem with substance abuse and if the police wanted to arrest them all, they know where they are. Pot is the least of their problems and arresting pot smokers is not supported by most Canadians much less the people of BC.

But they smoke cannabis openly in Toronto too, where 1 in 7 Canadians live. I started this thread at HempCity on the subject of "coffeehouses" in Canada- http://www.hempcity.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=580

43. Oh please. Anyone who's smoked pot and then stopped has
considerable evidence to the contrary.

The last thing we need in a time of crisis is to pretend that getting stoned is good for you.

Getting stoned is just another form of denial and evasion. I don't think that a criminal law solution is appropriate for the problem, but I do have a problem with people representing that there is something positive about being high on chemicals of any type.

There isn't.

Stoners are stoners, and most people recognize exactly what that means. This is why Cheech and Chong and all of the subsequent spin offs were funny, because we all recognized the type. It usually isn't about advanced intelligence.

the truth is there is a ton of evidence and proof that marijuana has medical benefits. it eases pain, reduces nausea, increases appetite, helps insomnia, helps anxiety for some, and I could go on...

those who use it know that it increases creativity, and can help you focus.

the real problem with pot is not THC and its affect on the brain. it's the smoke and its affect on the lungs. If people took pot by eating it or other means, it would be much better for you than many other drugs available over the counter or by prescription.

If you want to base your understanding of marijuana on what you see in Cheech and Chong movies, I guess we should also learn about mentally challenged people by watching "Forest Gump."

74. hah.
You obviously don't know many stoners then.

I once smoked several bowls and took mushrooms with the dean of the physics college at a highly respected university in the U.S.

I know several brilliant people who smoke marijuana on a fairly consistent basis.

Just because there are stereotypes for groups or types of individuals doesn't mean that they're true.

Correlation does not prove causation. If people are stupid stoners, it just means that they're both stupid and a stoner. There are plenty of intelligent people who smoke pot, and many stupid people who do not smoke pot.

Hell, I'm stoned right now. Say what you want about "denial and evasion", but I am quite happy with my life. I consider myself well engaged with the world around me, and a reasonably level-headed person.

48. I smoke pot almost every day.
I never believed any of that garbage from the war on some drugs.

Using a vaporizer minimizes the impact on the lungs as well.

53. Look if you got a vaporizer it's more than ALMOST every day.
Not that is bad or anything.

55. I made a homemade one with a soldering iron.
Why does that mean I smoke everyday? :smoke:

I did exaggerate a bit. I actually smoke about twice a week.
Sometimes I will go weeks without toking. That's one great thing about pot. Really no addiction AFAIC.

I can send you instructions how to make a vape with a soldering iron and a dimmer switch. I have to stay in pretty good shape so I don't like to smoke. I think the vape is GREAT !

57. Why do you have to stay in shape if you don't mind me asking?
Cause I race bicycles and ride about 250 -300 miles per week, and I'm expanding my nerve cells in my hippacampus every day. I appreciate the offer on the Vape, but call me ole fashion cause I just can't get use to those things.

Also how do people get the pictures by what they write on the threads?

58. Cannabis extract also shrinks brain tumours
Cannabis extracts may shrink brain tumours and other cancers by blocking the growth of the blood vessels which feed them, suggests a new study.

An active component of the street drug has previously been shown to improve brain tumours in rats. But now Manuel Guzmán at Complutense University, Spain, and colleagues have demonstrated how the cannabis extracts block a key chemical needed for tumours to sprout blood vessels – a process called angiogenesis.

Someday the health benefits will far outweigh the "stigma" and the up-tight, anti-drug prudes are going to acquiesce, give marijuana the respect it deserves and legalize it. One can hope.......

70. That's funny...
It reminds me of after my oldest daughter left home, whenever she'd stop by after we'd been toking, she'd go "Mmmm, it smells so homey in here." Hahaha.
