2. VW Polo turbodiesel does around 55 mpg
if I drive it sensibly - 47-50 mpg if I boot it.

100 bhp, 170 ft/lbs torque at 1,900 rpm, 6 CD player, ABS and climate control. Suspension is dropped by 10 mm so it sticks to the line.

Great little car.

You might not get it over in the US...don't know.

4. No Polos right now.
For a while, VW was distributing Polos in the US (as the "Fox").
But right now, we don't have either VW Polos or Audi A2s.

I expect this will change soon.

18. There's no plans for the Polo in the US
There are plans for a gas/hybrid Jetta in '07.

Americans don't like hatchbacks, hence why the Golf/GTi are such poor sellers in the US. VW doesn't see a market for the Polo or Lupo in the US except for hardcore VW fans, so fiscally it doesn't make sense to bring it here.

20. It also depends on the engine you've got
The US only gets the 1.9L PD. And when VW switched to the PD TDI (I think during the 04 model year), gas mileage went down.

3. Our Priuses
I drive an '04 Prius. The mileage is great, but it's not what they claim. I get more like 48 & 43. My wife's '02 Prius (the old model that looks like the Echo) gets a little less than that. Seems to stay around 39.

14. Well, OF COURSE she would get mileage like that.
The 20005 model year is 18,000 years in the future. I dopn't know how she got this preview model, but I'm surprised that it even runs on gasoline.

23. Hey, LostinVA
My Beetle is on the ship in the Gulf of Mexico right now. :)

It's scheduled to be at the dealership the week of Nov 7, but cars have been showing up early, so I'm thinking that it's going to be here the 1st or 2nd. Sweet.

The greatest part of my job is that I pull the reports that tell us where the cars are. So the day it moved from Factory Production to Intransit (thus getting a VIN) I was so excited and announced it to all the salesguys. :)

12. Those numbers are a joke, test proceedure isn't real world.
Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 08:52 AM by DainBramaged
If a TRUE Urban cycle test was run on every vehicle they make in the 3 climate zones in the US (and list THAT cycle for THAT zone on your window sticker, and they most certainly can) including warm ups in cold climates, AC on in hot climates, and the start and stop traffic cycle we ALL run into in the cities and major urban areas, maybe the results will wake people up. Some of those vehicles are LARGE REAL TRUCKS and MomBombs with huge passenger capacity, so lets not go off the deep end over these ESTIMATED numbers.

Suppose that's why "Q" moved 007 from a Bentley over to an Aston Martin in "Goldfinger?"

9. Hmm. Those numbers seem way off to me
The Jetta Diesel gets much more than 36/41mpg. My 2005 gets around 50 on freeway driving. I have a hard time believing that they would have dropped that much in a year.

13. I have on '03 wagon and also get 50 hwy. '06's are bigger
VW increased the size of the vehicle and the power of the engine, so there was a dropoff, but probably not that much in real world conditions.

If only biodiesel were a bit more convenient, I would be a truly happy motorist. As it is, I take comfort in knowing that the TDI gets double the city mileage and almost double the highway mileage of my last car.

19. I've 2 H3s since last night
But, the funny part, is that both cars had dealer tags on them. (Meaning someone at the dealership is driving them, like a New Car Manager, and the dealership is paying for the gas).

25. I'm sorry I understood
I was surprised as well that the Hummer wasn't on the list. I saw a truck carrying Suburbans and I saw the sticker, 12 city/16 highway. Yikes!

I was just stating that the only H3s I've seen were both dealerplates.
