4. On T.V. Crowley just said it again...
Utter Bullshit. We already have 180,000 vaccines for this virus.

The Admin has had a plan on the table for over a year that they have failed to ACT UPON.

And now it's TOO LATE TO ACT. So they get the media to spread lies about how they are not ABLE to prepare... the press, while doing a better job lately, is still an arm of the administration...

6. You Very Rarely Hear Bush Spoken About
by the repugs without an apology of some sort first. It is amazing, when you listen carefully, how all the pro-Bush pundits phrase their wording. Didn't their mothers teach them sometimes it is better to just keep your mouth closed.

9. Technically nobody can prepare for an unknown virus mutation
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 12:28 PM by Mr_Spock
But, of course, they are leaving out the fact that there is a generic anti-viral medication that can significantly inprove mortality rates that this administration has ignored up until now. If it were to hit sooner-than-later we'd be fucked - and it would be exclusively the blame of this maladministration. Shame on CNN!

10. Apparently, though, Tamiflu is not effective against this strain
Other countries (UK, France) have been stockpiling for months and the US, well, hasn't. That was a BIG problem for me until I read last week (forget where, some Public Health journal -- I'm an epidemiologist) that Tamiflu is a bust.

If we now know the 25 or 30 mutations that allowed the 1918 strain to leap from birds to humans, we can (a) at least track the changes in the current strain and (b) (and I'm not an infectious disease epidemiologist) perhaps try to find a vaccine for the 1918 version and HOPE it offers some defense agains this bird flu.

I would also suggest some more Tamiflu studies, just to be certain.

11. That's news to me...
There was talk that Tamiflu improved mortality rate significanly - I wonder why so many people believe that it offers some help for this disease?

I guess that CNN may have it right after all - wouldn't surprise me - the quality of "news" on GD has declined significantly recently.
