CHENNAI: Hurricane Katrina has forced a medical student of Tulane University to undertake an unexpected journey to Chennai for internship in a city hospital, as rebuilding the varsity campus is likely to take months.

John Hay Wells is one of New Orleans' stoic citizens, who set out in flat-bottomed boats as part of search and rescue operations across a city that lay submerged in floodwater for days on end. While most of his classmates have signed up at Bayler University to continue education, John chose to visit K.J. Hospital, where he had spent months doing research a few years ago.

He has lost count of the number of people he rescued by breaking down doors with hatchets or carving out attics with power saws. They ranged from two-year-olds to ninety-year-olds.
